What is unusual, we might say unnatural, about these tra-ditional details, and what is first to call them to our attention, is the gravity-defying position of the coral amulet [Fig. 3]: it does not hang vertically at the lowest point of the necklace's loop, but seems miraculously suspended and turned horizon-tally directly over Christ's sternum. Moreover, close observa-tion reveals that the branch of coral bears an astonishing resemblance to the human pulmonary tree [Fig. 4].8
