The Montefeltro Altarpiece was not the only occasion on which Piero used the anatomical motif. Several years later he repeated the pulmonary reference in his Senigallia Madonna [Fig. 5], a small private devotional image without documenta-tion.9 In this composition, the Child sits upright in his mother's arms holding a rose and looking like a little "philosopher" in his classical toga.10 The amulet hangs at the bottom of the string of coral beads, again in its proper place against his chest.
