The Montefeltro Altarpiece was not the only occasion on which Piero used the anatomical motif. Several years later he repeated the pulmonary reference in his Senigallia Madonna [Fig. 5], a small private devotional image without documenta-tion.9 In this composition, the Child sits upright in his mother's arms holding a rose and looking like a little "philosopher" in his classical toga.10 The amulet hangs at the bottom of the string of coral beads, again in its proper place against his chest. Both renderings are about the same size, but because the amulet in the first version is a small detail in a large panel (248 x 170 cms), and the second is an important part of a quite small painting (61 x 53.5 cms), in the latter, the trachea
