The Beginning FACS Exploration class at Timberline Middle School is designed to introduce students to basic nutrition, cooking skills and child development. This course also emphasizes student responsibility and will focus on skills such as dependability, organization, cooperation, creating, problem solving, time-management, following directions, and punctuality.

In this course, students will:

Understand their role and ability to improve interpersonal relationships. Recognize values and learn the importance of setting and achieving goals. Establish confidence making positive food choices, menu planning, and food preparation techniques Develop understanding and hands-on experience with food safety and sanitation, MyPlate and Dietary Guidelines, food pricing, basic nutrition, and much more.

Recipe Binder, Supplies and Fees:

The fee paid at registration will cover all of the cooking materials and supplies for the semester. However, each student MUST bring a pencil and/or pen to class every day as well. Students are also required to bring a 3-ring binder (1-inch wide) every day to class in which he/she will keep recipes, worksheets, notes, and all other information handed out in class. These recipe binders will be graded for organization and upkeep on a regular basis. Students may also bring an apron to class on lab days (optional), which can be stored in the classrooms apron closet if they wish.

Class Rules:
Students should feel both physically and emotionally safe in this classroom. Food and kitchen safety is critical in our classroom; therefore, there are strict lab rules that must be followed. Any student who has been given sufficient warnings and still chooses not to adhere to the class rules will be excused from the classroom for the remainder of the day and will lose ALL cooking privileges for that week. If unacceptable behavior continues, the student will lose citizenship and/or participation points and parents will be contacted. Other disciplinary measures will take place under Mrs. Pearson's discretion. Class rules are as follows: 1. Listen and follow instructions the first time. 2. Never talk when the teacher is talking. Speak positive and appropriately and raise a hand for a turn to talk. 3. Be respectful to the teacher and other students. 4. Follow all lab rules. 5. Come to class prepared: bring a pen/pencil, and your binder.

Additionally, all Timberline Middle School policies will be followed in this class. Please refer to the school handbook for further information. Cheating in any form is not acceptable. Students who copy or cheat (presenting someone elses work as their own) will be given no credit on the assignment and will not receive participation points for the day, with a possibility of being sent to the office.

Assignments and Late work:

Sufficient time will be given for students to finish most assignments in class. All assignments must be turned in by the assigned due date. Assignments turned in after the due date can only receive up to 90% It is up to the student to make sure they have all assignments turned in. Students with more than 3 missing assignments will not be allowed to participate in labs. In the case of a cooking lab absence, special arrangements must be made with Mrs. Pearson to complete the lab outside of classroom. It is the responsibility of the student to get the recipe and make these arrangements; otherwise, participation points will be lost. All late work is due one week before the end of the term. Work turned in after this time will not be accepted and the student will receive no credit on the assignment. Extra credit is available only upon teacher approval.

Citizenship, Absences and Tardies:

Classroom activities and atmosphere cannot be recreated for an absence or tardy. Therefore, it is necessary for regular and prompt attendance. Students who are truant or tardy (unexcused) may not make up missed points. When a student is absent, they are responsible for finding out what they missed in class. What we do in class each day will be posted on our class website. After you have checked the website, you can talk to the teacher. If a student will be absent for an extended period of time, please talk with Mrs. Pearson beforehand for makeup work. A student has one week to turn in assignments missed while they were absent. After one week points will be deducted from the assignment. The Timberline Middle School-wide tardy and absence policy will be followed. Please refer to the student manual for further explanation.

Grading Policy and Breakdown:

At the end of the term, all points will be totaled and divided by the number of possible points to arrive at a percentage. Updated grades will be posted in the classroom weekly. The grade scale breakdown is as follows: 94-100% 90-93% 86-89% 83-85% =A =A=B+ =B 80-82% 77-79% 74-76% 70-73% =B=C+ =C =C67-69% 64-66% 60-63% 0-59% =D+ =D =D=F
