Whole Brain Teaching Sub Notes

Class-yes

(attention getter):)To get my classes attention simply

say Class! and then theyll reply Yes! (clapping their hands together in front of them and putting their eyes on you). When you say Class! they will say Yes!, AND they have to say it the way you said it. If I you say Classity-class-class! they have to say Yessity-yes-yes!. If you say it loudly, they have to respond loudly. If you whisper, they respond in a whisper. They have to match your tone and intensity, actions, noise level etc. (give and depending on how they do with this. See below)

Hands and Eyes: Our Class Rules:

When you say hands and eyes

students will clap their hands and look at you. However you say hands and eyes is how the students respond. For example, if you say hands, hands, hands and eyes, they repeat hands, hands, hands and eyes then look at you. I use this a lot when I need their full attention, or for them to put down something they are playing with.

1) Listen when your teacher is talking Listen (point to your ears) when your teacher (kids point to me) is talking (move hands together and apart like a mouth). 2) Follow directions Quickly Follow directions quickly. (As we say this, we snap out fingers along with each word and say the rule quickly.) 3) Respect others, respect yourself, respect our classroom Respect others (point out), respect yourself (point to yourself), and respect your school (point to the ground) 4) Raise your hand to speak, or stand (hand up, talking hand) Raise your hand (raise your right hand) to speak (make moving mouth motion) or stand use index and middle finger to 'walk'). 5) Be safe, be kind, be honest Be safe (hug yourself), be kind (cover your heart with both hands), be honest (place right hand up, like you were about to testify).

The Scoreboard:

The scoreboard is our classroom management tool. Points are awarded for things such as following the rules, achieving goals etc. The points are erased and begin again each day, so you may give points for whatever you see fit. Its important to keep the within 3 points of the in order to keep the students suspense. At the end of class, if students have more than they get a reward of doing a few min. of brain breaks (see sticks on my desk labeled brain breaks) Heres the fun part. When you give students a they get to do a very quick oh ya using an inside but enthusiastic voice. If you give the students get a they get to do a very quick groan/ shoulder shrug using an inside voice (shoulders starting the at the top and going down)

Magic Mirror:

The mirror is used when you want students

to copy your gestures. You would say class, they would respond yes then you would give the cue magic mirrors. They will then put us their hands silently and make their imaginary mirrors, ready to copy what you are doing and the gestures you are showing them. Remind them that regular mirrors dont talk they just copy. Example Teacher: Class Students: Yes Teacher: Mirrors Students: (hands go up silently) Teacher: This is how we count to 5. 1,2,3,4,5 holding up one finger at a time. Students: (copy putting up one finder at a time along with you) Teacher: Class Students: yes -move on in the lesson

Magic Mirror With Words: This works the same way as

regular mirrors only the students will repeat after you the actions AND words. Its a repeat after me style.

Teach-Ok:
1) 2) 3) 4)

Students are divided into 1s and 2s (if at the carpet) or

turn and teach partners if at their desks. See the chart on the closet door for partnering at the carpet. If you see Teach-OK in my lesson follow this procedure. This gives students a chance to be the teacher and to teach small amounts of information using gestures. Present information Turn to the class clap two times and say, Teach! Students will clap two times and respond OK! Students will turn to their partner and teach, using actions /gestures what you just taught them 5) Walk around and listen to the students to check for understanding. 6) You yell Switch! The Students will say back switch and continue giving the other person a chance to talk. If there is odd numbers two students become number 1s. 7) Call them back to attention with the Class-Yes

Switch:
speak.

Switch is used along with Teach-OK. When you say

Switch", the class will respond "Switch!" and trade so the other person has a chance to
