EL POTENCIAL CREATIVO DE LA CERAMICA

La ceramica conjuga innovacidn, diseno y diferenciacidn, logrando resultados esteticos extraordinarios.
'El Pala& de Congresos y Expos~ciones de Huesca, obra del arqultecto Rafael Beneytez Durdn, es un ejemplo de c6mo la cerdm~ca, con todas sus posibilidades, es capaz de expresar las intenclones conceptuales de 10s proyectos arquitect6n1cos. En este caso, la pieza eleg~da es de gran formato, negro azabache, espolvoreada con virutas metdlicas y vitrificadas. Su misi6n es la de reflejar el firmamento, de mod0 que la gran masa horizontal que forma el complejo, pierde el hieratisrno y su condict6n volum&trica a cambio de una v~brante empatfa con 10s . registros cromdticos del cielo. Por el dla; la cornposicidn de las piezas cerdmicas otorga a la superficie una naturaleza espejada que reproduce una imagen distinta del edificio desde cada dngulo que se observa. Al rnismo tiernpo, el color negro de la cerdmica le otorga la cualidad del carnuflaje, llegando a sus rnornentos mds intensos en el amanecer y el anochecer, donde el edificio se rnaterializa con la luz naciente o se desrnaterializa en la oscuridad de la noche. En ese instante, la volurnetria se descornpone y se disuelve al ser sustituida por un engarce de ldrnparas de alabastro, que se han insertado entre las piezas de cerdmica para representar la constelaci6n perdida en la ciudad por el efecto de contarninaci6n lurninica. La apuesta de la cerdrnica por la investigaci6n, la versatilidad y la estetica, rnultiplica el potencial innovador y creativo de la cerdmica, convirtiendola en la soluci6n constructiva para proyectos de arquitectura e inter~orismo.

Puede que aun no estemos familiarizados con esta terminologia, per0 es mas que probable que en pocos aiios nos encontremos de viaje en compaiiia de uno de estos 'libros' electronicos. El papel de las bibliotecas en la sociedad actual se somete a revision no solo por la llegada de nuevos ingenios informaticos, sin0 por la consolidacion de la sociedad del takeaway Y es que el peregrinaje que nos llevaba del sofa a la biblioteca parece haber llegado a su fin con un simple clic sobre el icono de descargas. No se ve igual, no huele igual y desde luego no es igual al tacto. Tal vez la orfandad de deseo y fetichismo que padece un libro digital sea reemplazada por la prontitud y la accesibilidad, per0 no cabe duda de que no sera lo mismo leer a Nabokov sobre una pantalla luminosa que sobre las paginas desgastadas de un libro de siempre. Las propuestas que inyectan savia nueva a las veteranas 'bibliotecas de papel' se presentan a continuacion de la mano de BIG, Sou Fujimoto, REX, MVRDV, KSP, Carlos Ferrater y Paredes & Pedrosa.

Maybe we are still not familiarized with these terms but it is more than probable that in a few years we will find ourselves on a trip in the company of one of these electronic 'books'. The role of libraries in contemporary society is under review not only because of the arrival of new computer devices, but also because of the establishment of the 'takeaway' society Thus, it looks like the pilgrimage that used to take us from the couch to the library has come to an end with a simple click on the download icon. It does not look the same, it does not smell the same and surely it does not feel the same. Maybe the lack of desire and fetishism that electronic books suffer will be replaced with immediacy and accessibility, but there is no doubt that it will not be the same to read Nabokov on a light screen than on the worn out pages of a traditional book. The designs that are now revitalizing the old 'paper libraries'are presented here through the proposals of BIG Sou Fujimoto, REX, MVRDV, KSP, Carlos Ferrater and Paredes & Pedrosa.

The project, with an area of 6,500m2, will custody a total of 200,000 books. This spiralling, continuous bookshelf conceived as superimposed layers will shape all the reading spaces.

Dispuesta como remate de 10s Jardines de la Agricultura de Cbrdoba, el proyecto de 7.000m2 estara fuerternente ligado a este entorno de excepcibn a trav6s de un muro cortina que abre la biblioteca al parque.

Designed to wrap up the Gardens of the Agriculture in Cdrdoba, the 7,OOOmzproject will be strongly linked to this exceptional setting thanks to a glass wan that opens the library to the park.

La cubierta plegada methlica del edificio organiza una serie de lucernarios para la iluminaci6n de la sala de lectura. De este modo, la sala contar& con luz natural del norte y vistas hacia el jardin floral.

The plied metal roof of the building organizes a series of skylights to illuminate the reading area. In this way, the hall will have natural northem light and views of the flower garden.

En la ciudad de Imabari, un empresario nipon ha querido homenajear la figura de Toyo Ito financiando un museo dedicado a su obra. El arquitecto coreano (japones de adopcion), plantea el nuevo edificio como la union de dos partes, una nueva y otra antigua. La primera es la recreacion de su propia casa de Tokio (construida en 1984), y la segunda, un volumen formado por cuatro tipos de poliedros. En pleno corazon de la vieja San Petersburgo, el estudio de Ben van Berkel levantara un teatro dedicado a la danza. El concurso organizado al efecto tuvo como finalistas las propuestas de Jean Nouvel, Snerhetta, ZAO y UNStudio, siendo esta ~iltima la que mas convencio. Tambien en un entorno medieval estara el parlamento que Esteve Bonell construira en Lausana, sintesis entre construccion tradicional y nuevas tecnologias. Situada a orillas de una autopista vienesa, la sede funeraria diseiiada por Delugan Meissl combina espacios abiertos con rincones de discreci6n. De similares proporciones, la piscina ideada por Martin de Lucio conecta con un centro deportivo mediante una pasarela que cruza la calle.

In the city of Imabari, a Japanese businessman has decided to pay tribute to the architect Toyo Ito by financing a museum dedicated to his work. The Korean architect (Japanese by adoption), presents the new museum as the union of two buildings, new and old. The first one is a recreation of his own house in Tokyo (built in 1984), and the second is a volume that forms four types of polyhedrons. In the very heart of St. Petersburg, the studio of Ben van Berkel will build a new theater devoted to dance. The architectural competition had among its shortlisted proposals those by Nouvel, Snohetta, Z4O and UNStudio, and the latter one was finally chosen. The Parliament building that Esteve Bonell will design in Lausanne will also go up in a medieval context, a synthesis of traditional construction and new technologies. Next to a Viennese highway, the new Funeral Parlor by Delugan Meissl will combine open and private spaces. With similar geometry, the swimming pool designed by Martin de Lucio connects with a sports center via a footbridge crossing the street.

Located in the center of the city, the project preserves the views of the Prince Vladimir and Peter and Paul . cathedrals from the square, solving at the same time its geometric conditions.

El Palacio de la Danza dara cabida a 1.300 espectadores repartidos en do5 salas (1.000 y 300). Estas se configuran segljn el resultado del analisis de 10s flujos de acceso, introduci6ndose as1 el espacio exterior.

The Dance Palace will fit 1,300 spectators distributed in two auditoriums (1,000 and 300). They are arranged following the access flows; in this way, the exterior space makes its way inside.

La planta del edificio se organiza en torno a un patio interior de acceso. Este patio se abre a la fachada noroeste cornunicando la nueva sede con el crernatorio existente y dotando de continuidad al conjunto.

The building's floor plan is organized around a central access patio. This patio opens up to the north-west facade linking the new building with the former crematorium and giving continuiiy to the complex.

Fundada en Suiza en 1912, Holcim es una de las mayores empresas cementeras del mundo. La sostenibilidad es su buque insignia, siendo esta la condicion esencial en el concurso para la construccion de un nuevo edificio en su ciudad de origen. De las seis propuestas que quedaron finalistas, aqui se presentan 10s tres primeros premios, concedidos a Christian Kerez, Lacaton a Vassal y SANAA. Cien aAos despues del concurso de arquitectura que llevo a un jovencisimo Charles Rennie Mackintosh a construir el edificio para la escuela de Glasgow, se ha convocado un nuevo concurso para su ampliacion en un solar justo enfrente de la emblematica facultad. La propuesta presentada por Steven Holl junto a 10s escoceses JM Architects fue la que mas convencio al jurado, que premio no solo el proyecto, sino la solvencia del equipo. El Ayuntamiento de Rotterdam, construido en 10s aAos cincuenta, nunca se termino. Ahora se anuncia su culminacion con la selection final del trabajo de OMA, que auna las funciones publicas de la ciudad con un ejercicio personal, respetando el original y revitalizando el centro hist6rico.

Founded in Switzerland in 1912, Holcim is one of the largest cement companies in the world. Sustainability is its flagship, being an essential condition in the competition for the construction of a new building in its home city. Of the six proposals shortlisted, presented here are those that earned the first three prizes, that went to Christian Kerez, Lacaton & Vassal and SANAA. A hundred years after the architecture competition that made it possible for a young Charles Rennie Mackintosh to build the Glasgow School of Art, a new competition has been called to design an extension on a site opposite the emblematic building. The proposal presented by Steven Holl together with the Scottish JM Architects was the one chosen by the jury, which praised not only the project but also the competence of the team. The Rotterdam City Hall, built in the fifties, was never finished. Now its completion is announced with the final selection of the complex designed by OMA, that, with a personal gesture, will gather all the public functions while respecting the original piece and revitalizing the city center.

Since 1940, the city has housed a variety of architectural styles that coexist in different ways. Within this context, OMA creates a 'formless'building made up of small stacked elements.

La estructura esta formada por grandes vigas Vierendeel de acero. Con ello se logra dejar vacia la mayor parte de la planta baja, un espacio p~jblico donde se relacionaran ciudadano y ciudad.

The structure is composed of large Vierendeel beams of steel. These beams allow freeing up almost all the ground floor, generating a public space that will connect citizen and city.

The office corridor is wrapped around the grand hall below, and features views of it. Meanwhile, daylight goes to workstations via fiber optic cables. The tower is independent from the public space.

El nuevo ayuntarniento respeta el perfmetro del original y soluciona la actual preocupacibn por la sostenibilidad y 10s materiales. Asi mismo, la luz natural se revela fundamental en su concepci6n. The new City Hall preserves the same perimeter of the original one and addresses the current concerns about sustainability and materials. In the same way, natural light is essential in the design.

La luz y las vistas se consiguen a travhs de 10s pasillos abiertos que forran el interior de la fachada. Tambibn hay tres atrios, un patio y cuatro lucernarios, tres de 10s cuales iluminan la tienda inferior.

Light and views make their way in through the open corridors that line the facade interior. There are also three atria, a courtyard and four lightwells, three of which allow light into the store below.

An innovative climate concept is proposed: an ice cellar with capacity for two million liters is located under the car parking. In this way, ice is used to cool the building during the warmer periods.

Supported by his partner Li Hu, in charge of the Beijing studio since its opening in 2006, one of the most prominent American architects of the last decades reveals his most experimental profile during these effervescent times for China. What does a horizontal skyscraper look like? The Vanke Center answers this question through a branched piece that measures in length the same as New York's Empire State Building measures in height (448m), an iconic reinterpretation that hovers over the coastline of the city of Shenzhen. With this project for the new headquarters of the firm Vanke Co. Ltd., one of the real estate giants of the buoyant Chinese economy, Steven Holl experiments again with the so-called mixed-use buildings after the inauguration of the Linked Hybrid in 2008 (see Arquitectura Viva 118-119).

Una via publica desde la 'cabeza del dragon' conectara a traves del hotel y apartarnentos hasta las oficinas. Como una estrategia tropical, el edificio y 10s jardines integrar6.n nuevas tecnologias sostenibles.

A public path beginning at the 'dragon's head' will connect through the hotel and the apartment zones up to the office wings. As a tropical strategy, the building and the site will integrate several new sustainable aspects.

Gracias a 10s estanques, alimentados por un sistema de aguas grises, el centro ofrece un acondicionamiento adecuado. El edificio se realizara ernpleando rnateriales autoctonos como el barnbu.

An adequate climate control is achieved inside the center thanks to the cooling ponds fed by a greywater system. The building will be executed using local materials such as bamboo.

Norman Foster, the most recent Prince of Asturias Award for the Arts, has always used drawing as a tool for architectural design. His skilled hand with the pencil allowed him to obtain a scholarship to study architecture in Yale, where he took his first steps towards becoming the architect he is today. In a gallery that he himself has remodeled, two hundred drawings and several models chart half a century devoted to architecture. The history of biology began in 1831, when Charles Darwin, a young theology student, boarded as naturalist on the Beagle, an English ship that sailed around the world during five years. The Origin of Species (1859) was published almost three decades later. It was a treatise where he set out the principles of natural selection, shocking a sociefy that understood it like an attack on religion. En las ultimas decadas de bonanza, el mundo del arte se ha instalado en una realidad paralela donde grandes sumas de dinero se mueven en torno a artistas convertidos en estrellas rutilantes a gusto de 10s criticos, autenticos dioses que dictan lo que es arte y lo que no. Esta arbitrariedad se ve denunciada, por ejemplo, en un acido capitulo de la serie de television Los Simpson, donde el fallido intento de barbacoa de Homer resulta digno de elogio por una elite artistica que se olvida de el en cuanto se cansa de la novedad. Zoe Strauss (Filadelfia, 1970) reacciona contra esta actitud con 'I-95, un trabajo socialmente cornprometido que comenzo en 2000 y que tiene una decada de duracion: una vez al afio expone sus fotografias bajo la autopista que da nombre al proyecto, y 10s visitantes pueden llevarselas a casa por cinco d6lares. In recent decades of prosperity, the world of art has established itself in a parallel reality where huge sums of money circulate around artists transformed into stars by art critics, true gods who dictate what is art and what is not. The arbitrary reactions of this society are reflected, for example, in a caustic episode of the television series The Simpsons, in which Homer's failed attempt to build a barbacue becomes a praiseworthy action in the eyes of an artistic elite that forgets about him when they novelty wears out. Zoe Strauss (Philadelphia, 1970) reacts to this triviality with a piece of public art called '1-95: a socially committed work that began in 2000: once a year she exhibits her photographs under the expressway that lends its name to the project, and visitors can take them home for five dollars. Strauss, who is in favor of the democratization of art and against the limited series, is a revolutionary woman with a vast production, a sharp eye, a technical perfection that is unusual for a self-taught artist, and a moving vocation to generate a documentary oeuvre.

Oscar Nlemeyer acaba de cumplir 102 afios, y lo ha celebrado con su mujer, con quien se c a d en 2006, y con algunos de sus 26 descendientes -entre ellos dos bisnietos y dos tataranietos--. Una vez superados 10s problemas de salud que le llevaron a someterse a dos operaciones quirdrgicas en los dltimos meses, el arquitecto carioca ha vuelto a su actividad cotidiana, y acude diariamentea su estudio, en la playa de Copacabana, dedicado en cuerpo y alma a la arquitectura como lleva haciendo desde hace ya siete decadas. Alejandro Zaera y Farshld Moussavi han decidido separarse y disolver su firma Foreign OfficeArchitects, despuds de catorce afios trabajando juntos, segljn informa Building Design. Zaera y Moussavi coincidieron en Rotterdam en el estudio de Rem Koolhaas a princlpios de 1 0 s noventa, y en 1995 establecieron su propio estudio en Londres, ddndose pronto a conocer al ganar el concurso internacional para la terminal maritma del puerto de Yokohama, cuya construcci6n finalizaron en 2002. Actualmente el estudio esth desarrollandoproyectos en todo el mundo, y su oficina cuenta con una treintena de colaboradores.

Harry Gugger, uno de 10s socios principaIesdeJacques Herzogy Pierrede Meuron durante diecinueveafios, ha decidido abandonar la firma suiza y establecer su propio estudio. Gugger habla dirigido muchos de 10s proyectos mas importantes de la oficina de Basilea, especialmente el de la conversi6n de la central termica del Tdmesis en la Tate Modern, en cuya ampliacibnse encontraba trabajando actualmente. El arquitecto continuart3 impartiendo clases en la Escuela Polithnica de Lausanne, donde es profesor desde 2005. Peter Zumthor, el arquitecto y ebanista suizo ganador de la ultima edicion del Premio Pritzker, ha sido invitado por 10s responsables del LACMA (Los Angeles County Museum of Art) a colaborar en la reorganizacidn y cohesidn del conjunto de edificios que integran la instituci6n californiana, construidos principalmente entre 1960y 1980. Rem Koolhaas, con un proyecto que finalmente no llegd a construirse, y Renzo Piano, con un edificio cuya primerafase ha sido inaugurada recientemente, son algunos de 1 0 s arquitectos que han participado ya en una iniciativaque lleva afios en desarrollo y no acaba de materializarse.

Carmen Ruiz, arquitecta municipal de Sant Boi de Llobregat, ha sido imputada por el derrumbe el pasado mes de enero del tunel de bateo del polldeportivo de la localidad a consecuencia de un vendaval, lo que produjo la muefte de cuatro nifios y lesiones a otros nueve. Segdn el auto de la jueza, 10s hechos pueden constituir cuatro delitos de homicidio por imprudencia grave y nueve de lesiones. Junto a la arquitecta han sido imputados el arquitecto tdcnico y el constructor del edificio. Segljn el informe pericial, *la edification no reunla las condiciones precisas y necesarias de solidez y~eguridad que le eran requeridas para la funcion a que se hallaba destinada~. Rafael Arndiz (1911-19381, recien procla-' mado santo por el Papa Benedicto XVI, fueestudiante de arquitectura en Madrid en la d b da de 1930, antesde unirsea laordentrapense en el palentino monasterio de San lsidro de Duefias. En la ETSAM ha podido verse este otofio una exposicidn sobre su figura, considerada un ejemplo para 10sj6venes. Mientras, sigue adelante el proceso de beatificaci6n de otro arquitecto espafiol, el universal Antonl Gaudi, emprendido hace ya casi veinte afios.

Oscar Nlemeyer has just turned 102 years old, an event he has celebrated with his wife, whom he married in 2006, and with some of his 26 descendants - including several greatgrandchildren and great-great-grandohildren. Having overcome the health problems he suffered just recently and that had him undergo two surgeries, the Rio de Janeiro architect has resumed his professional activity, and goes every day to his studio, located in Copacabana beach, continuing to devote his heart and soul to architecture, as he has done now for seven decades. Alejandro Zaera and Farshid Mowssavl h a p decided to split and close their practice Foreign OfficeArchitects, after fourteen years of working togethe{ according to Building Design. Theysoon made a name for themselves when they won the competition to build the Yokohama International Port Terminal, the construction of which concluded in the year 2902. have already participated in an initiative that has been years under development, Carmen Ruiz, municipal architect of Sant Boi de Llobregat, has been held responsible for the collapse this past month of January of the roof of the town's sports hall, which caused the death of four children and left nine injured. Thejudge's proceedings read that the facts of the case may constitute four charges of manslaughter and nine of injury. The technical architect and the contractor have also been charged. According to the expert r e p a "thebuilding did not gather the necessary conditions of stability and safety that were required for its assigned use4 Rafael Arndlz (19 11- 1938), who has just been canonized as a saint by Pope Benedict XVI, was a student of architecture in Mad# in the 1930s, before he joined the Trappist order in the monastery of San lsidro de Dueiias, in Palencia. The Madrid School of Architecture (ETSAM) has devoted an exhibition to Arndiz, considered an example for younger generations. In the meantime, the beatification process of another Spanish architect, the universal Antoni Gaud/,is still under way.
