SouthCentralHighSchoolHonorCode 20132014 Purpose:TocreateandmaintainanenvironmentoftrustandhonestyatSouthCentralHigh SchooltheHonorCodeaddressesissuesofacademicmisconduct,definesacademic cheating,plagiarism,lying,andstealing,andoutlinesproceduresfordealingwithHonorCode violations.Academicandnonacademicviolationsandtheirconsequencesareinthestudent handbookundertheGuidelinesforStudentDisciplinePolicy.

DEFINITIONSOFHONORCODEVIOLATIONS: AcademicCheatingisdefinedas,butisnotlimitedto: Toactdishonestlybycopyinganotherstudentsanswerstoaquiz,test,homework,oranyother

schoolassignmentandsubmititasyourownworkfortheteachersevaluationandgrading. Toactdishonestlybybringinginorcreatingintheclassroomanyunauthorizedmaterials(suchas acheatsheet,answerswrittenonhand,shoes,desk,etc.)foruseinansweringquestionsona quiz,test,orotherevaluation. Toactdishonestlybytalking,orusingsignsorgesturesduringaquiz,test,orotherevaluation wheresuchactionsareprohibited.

AcademicPlagiarismisdefinedas,butisnotlimitedto:
Toneglecttodocumentwithquotationmarksandparentheticaldocumentationanymaterialdirectly copiedfromanothersource(suchasbooks,magazines,theInternet,etc.). Toneglecttoacknowledgeparaphrasedmaterial(someoneelseswordsandideasrestatedinthe studentsownwords)withparentheticaldocumentation Touseothersworkasonesown,suchasturninginapaperwrittenbyaparentoranotherstudent, apapercopiedordownloaded,inwholeorinpart,fromtheInternet,orapieceofart,music,ora projectthatisnotonesown.

AcademicLyingisdefinedas,butisnotlimitedto:
Todeliberatelypresentafalsestatementasbeingtruetoanyschoolofficialsuchasgivingafalse name,failingtogivecompleteinformation,orevenpretendingtobeillinordertogainextra preparationtimetocompletetests,quizzes,oranyotherassignment.

AcademicStealingisdefinedas,butisnotlimitedto:
Totakethepropertyofanotherwithouttherightorpermissiontodosoandintendingtokeepor wrongfullyusethatproperty(suchasstealingatestoranswerkeyfromateacher).

PENALTIESFORVIOLATINGTHEHONORCODE: Teacherswillconferencewiththestudentabouttheviolation. Teacherswillmakecontactwiththestudentsparentsandexplainthesituationandthepartofthe

honorcodehasbeenviolated. Teacherswillturninadisciplinereferralformtothestudentsadministratorafterboththestudent andtheparenthavebeeninformedofthesituation,whichwillserveasawarningforthefirst violation.

Thestudentwillreceiveazeroontheassignment,accordingtothePittCountySchoolsDiscipline Code. Administratorswillconferencewiththestudentaboutthesituationandenforceappropriate disciplinaryactionsinaccordancewithPittCountySchoolspolicy. Repeatedviolationsbythestudentwithinoneschoolyearmayresultinfurtherdisciplinaryactions, including,butnotlimitedto,removalfromacademicsocieties. GuidanceCounselors,Teachers,andAdministratorswillworktogethertoconferencewiththe parentandstudentifthesituationnecessitatessuchanaction.

PROCEDURESTOPREVENTVIOLATIONSOFTHEHONORCODE:

TeachersandAdministratorswillensurethatstudentsareorientedtotheHonorCodeandare awareofthedefinitionsofcheating,plagiarism,lying,andstealingbypresentingthisinformation duringthefirstweekoftheschoolyear. Teachersareresponsibleformakingsurethestudentsareawareoftheproperdocumentation procedurerequiredtoavoidplagiarism. TeachersmayrequirestudentstosignanHonorCodestatementonanyassignmenttoverifythat thestudentwasnotinviolationoftheHonorCode.Thisstatementmayeitherbehandwrittenbythe studentorincludedintheassignmentbytheteacher. Thestatementwillappearasfollows:Onmyhonor,IcertifythatIdidnotgiveorreceiveaid onthisassignment/quiz/testandthatIamnotinviolationoftheHonorCodeofSouthCentralHigh School. StudentswillreceiveacopyoftheHonorCodetoassistthemindefiningwhatconstitutesa violationoftheHonorCodeandhowtheycanavoidsuchviolations.TheHonorCodewillalsobe postedontheschoolwebsite. StudentswillavoidsituationswhichcouldleadtotheviolationoftheHonorCodeandavoidall unauthorizedassistanceontheirschoolwork.

Studentswillavoidplagiarizingby:
Makingsuretheyuseparentheticaldocumentationinalloftheirpaperstogivepropercredittotheir sources. Usingquotationmarksandparentheticaldocumentationaroundmaterialcopieddirectlyfrom anothersource. Usingparentheticaldocumentationafteranyparaphrasedmaterial. TurninonlytheirownworkanddonotcutandpastefromInternetsites. Avoidtypingapaperwiththesourceopeninfrontofthecomputer.Studentsshouldreada paragraph,turnthesourceoversoitcannotbeseen,andthentypetheinformationtheyremember intheirownwords.Gobackandaddanymoredetailsthatwereleftoutbyconsultingwiththe sourceagain.Oncethattopiciscompleted,useparentheticaldocumentationtogivecredittothe source. Donotcutandpastesentences,paragraphs,orwholepagesofinformationfromtheInternetinto papers. StudentsareexpectedtoreportHonorCodeviolationstoateacheroradministratoriftheyseeone occurring.
