AUTO CAD TRAINING 6 - X-REF X-REF: An X-ref is an external reference' to another AutoCAD drawing file. One file can reference many other files and display them as if they were one. These are used in larger projects for many reasons: They keep the file sizes down. They allow many users to work on individual components of a project. Every time an X-ref is loaded, it is the most recent version of the drawing.

Go to Insert menu External References.

TO LOAD THE LAYER PROPERTIES TO THE XREF DRAWING FROM THE BASE DRAWING USE THE COMMAND VISRETAIN If u Sets VISRETAIN TO: 0 - The layer table, as stored in the reference drawing (Xref), takes precedence. Changes made to Xref-dependent layers in the current drawing are valid in the current session only and are not saved with the drawing. When the current drawing is reopened, the layer table is reloaded from the reference drawing and the current drawing reflects those settings. The layer settings affected are On, Off, Freeze, Thaw, Color, Ltype, LWeight, and PStyle (available only in named-plot style drawings). 1 - Xref-dependent layer changes made in the current drawing take precedence. Layer settings are saved with the current drawing's layer table and persist from session to session. You need to set your VISRETAIN variable to 0 in the file that has the XREF in it. Go back to the XREF, Save, and then reload the changes back in the working file. Be sure to set your VISRETAIN back to 1, because if you have layers free zed, or viewports set up, it will knock this settings out with every save of the XREF file. (VISRETAIN WOULDNT WORK IF YOU ARE USING VIEWPORT FREEZES) NOTE: When you are going to move drawing to another location such as pen drive or another computer or other path one thing remember, always copy or cut both drawings BASE file and x-ref. file as well.
