Case Study 6 More than Just Casinos The viewpoint in this case is subjective as it depends highly on the ideology

that the person holds. If a person is more of a Christian virtues follower, he might simply say that gambling is a wrong and it should never be implemented for any cause. However, another viewpoint may come from a Machiavellian philosophy, he might say that the end justified the mean. In my case, I am a Machiavellian therefore I believe that its alright to conduct gambling for the sake of its beneficiaries. But when only a small portion of the income from gambling is given to its beneficiaries, then its another conversation. I saw how the government worked through the PAGCOR in helping street children changes their current status, in giving them a chance to have a comfortable life. For me, its one of the governments ways to distribute the unequal wealth throughout our country. I like the concept since its a social responsibility through irresponsibility. However, this agency does not exploit those who can afford to spend thousands to millions in casinos for the sake of those in the lower economic sector of the country. They are enjoying as they are entertained by the games that the casinos had offered them. Plus, these gamblers are not forced to play at the casinos ran by PAGCOR. They willfully enter and spend on the casinos premises. In fact, I applaud this agency more than hundreds of religious organizations which collect money from their members in threat of burning the rest of their eternal lives in hell or the promise of going to heaven. There are several religious organizations which didnt care about the social welfare. What is legal does not necessarily be moral. I agree with this statement as I heard it about a hundred of times during our classes. Casinos are legal yet gambling is immoral. The problem is, how do people define moral? I believe that the concept of morality is highly subjective and depends on the ideologies of an individual. It could come from his religion, political affiliation, nationality, etc. There is no universal meaning for morality or established moral standards which everyone should follow. In my own point of view, gambling is moral as far as no fraud is involved. Definitely, anything legal does not necessarily be moral. Like the issue of the Reproductive Health Bill. Most catholic claim that contraception is immoral and therefore a mortal sin. On the other hand, there are some people that claim that its not immoral to use contraception. Again, the concept of morality is highly subjective. Moral or not, its still legal. My definition of moral is what our conscience dictates. Does it harm other people? Yes, gambling destroys family, reduces production, yields to financial problems to some. I agree that gambling is a social ill yet it is legal but it helps millions of people. I think that justifies the argument about the use of Casinos. PAGCOR uses a risky trade-off between social welfare and morality.
