Per our recent telephone conversation on Friday, December 12, 2008. Below are
Security department issues that need to be presented to the Policy Committee for review
and if possible brought to resolution for Board Approval.
First, the title of “School Law Enforcement Officer” should be changed to “School
Security Officer”.
Second, a “Use of Force” policy based on existing Standard Operating Procedure should
be established. Such policy should contain language based on the NJ Attorney Generals’
Use of Force guidelines. In addition, this policy should address the issue of Restraining
Students. Appropriate language can be found in section 13.11, subsections 1, 2 and 4 of
the school districts Standard Operating Procedures Manual.
Third, Policy should be adopted on basic and in-service training of Officers’. This
should include a basic comprehensive course that touches on all aspects of the security
Officers’ job description and taught by Certified Instructors. In-service training should
be on a bi-annual basis and include Use of force, Restraining Techniques, Harassment
and Communication Skills.
Lastly, a Standard Uniform Policy needs to be established as follows:
Thanks in advance for your help. I will certainly make myself available to the
committee upon request.
