Additive Inverse: What happens when you add two numbers that are opposites, like 5 and -5; they cancel each other, resulting in zero. In other words, the sum of a number and its additive inverse is zero. o Examples of the Additive Inverse Property 2 + (-2) = 0 x + (-x) = 0 -0.5 + 0.5 = 0 + =0 o Non-Examples of the Additive Inverse Property 2 + (-1) = 1 5 + (-6) = -1 + = Multiplicative Inverse: Numbers are multiplicative inverses of each other if they multiply to equal the identity, 1. o For example, 2 and 1/2 and -10 and -1/10. Absolute Value: The distance between a number and zero on the number line. We write the absolute value of -2 as | |. o Examples of Absolute Value | |=2 | |= | | = 6.5 Integers: The set of whole numbers and their opposites {, -3, -2, -1, 0, 1, 2, 3, } o Non-examples of integers: 3.16, 3/4, Long Division: Standard procedure suitable for dividing simple or complex multi-digit numbers. It breaks down a division problem into a series of easier steps. Natural Numbers: The set of numbers {1, 2, 3, 4, }. Also called counting numbers. Negative Numbers: The set of numbers less than zero. Opposite Numbers: Two different numbers that have the same absolute value. Example: 4 and -4. Positive Numbers: The set of numbers greater than zero.

Rational Numbers: The set of numbers that can be written in the form a/b where a and b are integers and b 0. For example, fractions, repeating and terminating decimals. Repeating Decimal: A decimal number in which a digit or group of digits repeats without end. The bar notation is used for repeating decimals. The numbers that lie underneath the bar are those that repeat. Terminating Decimal: A decimal that contains a finite number of digits. (Does not repeat) Zero Pair: Pair of numbers whose sum is zero. 1) The temperature one morning may start at some temperature, increase by 10 degrees during the day, but then decrease by 10 degrees by that night. This means there has been no total change in temperature for the day, because the temperature that morning and then later that night was the same.
