Importance of Instructional Material -it act as the primary resource in the teaching of language arts.

It allows students to develop their abilities in reading, listening, viewing, thinking, speaking, writing and using media and technology. It also helps teacher to achieve program goals and protect the integrity of the programs GUIDELINES FOR SELECTION OF MATERIALS IN ENGLISH LANGUAGE ARTS PROGRAMS

Criteria

i) Connection to Educational Objectives -materials should align with the general philosophy, the curriculum goals of the program and the learning outcomes of the particular grade level. Selected materials must also able to create balance and emphasis in the curriculum itself. Ii) Relevance to Students Needs -materials must be readable, related to students background and suit the maturity level of the students themselves.

Scope of the Policy for Selection of Instructional Materials -use the purchased materials and consider other materials such as teachers and students work. It should also not intentionally restrain spontaneity and creativity in teachers a formal selection process for all materials used for instructional purposes.

Procedures for Selection of Instructional Materials

i) Responsibility for Selection Opportunity for Informal Selection -teachers should be creative by taking advantage to use materials which run through informal selection process. However, the materials chosen must meet the general selection criteria of educational relevance and ability to meet student needs. -done by the English language arts profesional with the help from administrators and school boards. ii) Selection Procedures -discuss every work under consideration, group the selected materials, maintain a file of written rationales to explain how the selections meet the selection criteria.
