Title : HOOKES LAW

Inference: the extension of a spring depends

on the applied force. Hypothesis: the greater the applied force, the higher the extension of a spring. Aim of experiment: to investigate the relationship between the extension of a spring and the applied force. Variables: a)manipulated: load of slotted weight. b)responding: extension of a spring c)fixed: spring constant

Apparatus/material: steel spring, slotted weight,

metre rule, retort stand Arrangement of apparatus:

Procedure:

The apparatus is set up as shown. The initial/original length of spring, is recorded. A slotted weight is attached to the end of the spring F = 1.0 N. The reading of the length of the spring is measured using metre rule. The extension of the spring, x is calculated using formula ( x = - ) . Step 3, 4 and 5 are repeated by using F = 2.0 N, 3.0 N, 4.0 N and 5.0 N. A graph of x against F is plotted.

Conclusion:

The extension of a spring is directly proportional to the applied force.


Precautions:

Make sure eyes are straight (perpendicular) to the scale of metre rule to avoid parallax error.
