Crescent E.L.I.T.E.

6th 8th Grade Syllabus (Tabbert)

September 3rd, 2013 Dear Crescent Academy Parents, It is my pleasure to welcome you and your new or returning student to Crescent Academy! I am very excited to begin a new school year with your middle schooler. Your child has been identified as a high achiever in math, reading, or both subjects! We have carefully analyzed data from previous test scores, quarter and final exam grades, as well as teacher recommendations, and believe that your child will excel in a more advanced setting for reading, math, or both subjects. Thus, your middle schooler has been assigned a schedule particular to their qualifications for the Crescent E.L.I.T.E. Program. I have many exciting things planned for this coming year including a wide variety of field trips, in-school activities, and many creative projects. In this program, you can expect students to work at an accelerated pace with more challenging lessons and materials. Many activities will be project based and hands-on. Please keep this document as your guide to the school year. It will answer many questions you may have and give you pertinent information for your childs success in the Crescent E.L.I.T.E. Program. Classroom Schedule 7th and 8th grade students who qualify for the program in math, reading, or both subject areas will be in my classroom during the designated time on their student schedules. 6 th graders will be excused from their self-contained classrooms at a designated time each day to participate in the accelerated program for reading, math or both subjects. They will be notified of this time on their first day of school. 6 th graders will only be expected to complete reading and/or math assignments for my classroom and will earn grades for each subject from me. Classroom Web Site This year, students and parents will have access to an online web site. This will provide you with all the resources necessary to be successful in the Crescent E.L.I.T.E. Program. The web site will be updated nightly with homework assignments, field trips, important information, syllabus forms, announcements, etc. Please feel free to contact me via the contact page on the site as will. I will respond within 24 hours. The web address is: http://mrstabbert.weebly.com. Parent-Teacher Contact At particular points during the school, I may require parent signatures on tests, assignments or in-class activities that I feel are integral to your childs development. I require these signatures in order to maintain an open line of communication between teachers and parents. Please be aware that these may be coming home throughout the school year. As always, I am aware that there may be extenuating circumstances. In this case, please do not hesitate to call, email, or write a letter to make me aware. Progress Reports will be distributed EVERY Monday, unless otherwise arranged. Please expect for these to come home on Monday afternoons. Grade points may be given for positive parent-teacher communication with regards to these assignments, agendas and Friday folders. Parents will also be granted access to our Skyward Family Access, an online Gradebook for you to view your students progress. I update grades DAILY so you can log in as frequently as you would like to see progress and/or missing

assignments. It is required that students purchase their own agendas as the school will not be providing them this year. This is noted on the school supply list.

Classroom Rules What is expected of students in one classroom will also be expected of them in the other classroom. It is very important that you reinforce that your student is to be respectful of these rules and procedures. The rules are as follows: 1. Everyone stays in their seats. 2. Everyone raises their hands. 3. Everyone follows directions. 4. Everyone is respectful. 5. Everyone cleans up the room. 6. Everyone is prepared. Discipline Plan All students will be held to high standards in terms of classroom behaviors. If students choose to partake in behaviors which hinder the academic environment, they will be held accountable for each of these behaviors every week. I will be recording disruptive behaviors on a spreadsheet, and Behavior Notices will be going home on Mondays for those students with five or more misbehaviors throughout the week. These Behavior Notices will need to be signed by a parent or guardian and returned on Tuesday. Also, there is a reflection page that will go home with the student on Monday and must be returned with the signed Behavior Notice on Tuesday. If Behavior Notices and reflections are NOT returned on Tuesday, students will receive phone calls home and/or office referrals. If persistent behaviors occur, you will be notified and the student will be referred to our Dean of Discipline. Reward Plan Students will be rewarded on a weekly basis for good behavior with yellow tickets. These are tickets passed out to students for positive behavior. At the end of the week, a number of these tickets will be drawn out of a basket and students will win a prize from the prize bin. Tickets for students to be excused from homework assignments will also be distributed for good behavior and grades throughout the school year. Students may also receive extra credit, positive phone calls home, and other rewards for excellent behavior. Textbooks Students will receive a textbook or novel for each subject. Included with this syllabus is a textbook form that must be signed and returned the first week of school. Students will not be able to take their textbooks from the classroom until this form is received. Please review with your student the importance of preserving our schools resources and treating them respectfully. Homework/Absent Work

Crescent E.L.I.T.E. 6th 8th Grade Syllabus (Tabbert)

Students will be given homework five days a week, dependent upon the nature of the activities. Please be expecting to see this homework come home. At the end of each quarter, I will allow students a window to turn in any missing assignments. Other than this window, I will not accept late work. The Late Work Policy is below: ~1 day late: 10% off grade ~2 days late: 50% off grade ~3 days or more: No Credit Given *Extra Credit will not be assigned to any subject in which the student has missing or late work. Students who are absent will have the number of days that they were absent to make up the missing work. For example, if a student is absent three days, they will have three days to make up the work. No make-up work will be given beyond these measures unless there are extenuating circumstances. In this situation, please contact me directly. Absent work will be given to your student upon their return. They are to return all work from their absence in this folder at one time. Any work that is lost will be found in the extra copy bin located in the classroom. Absence Policy as written in the Crescent Academy Student Handbook If a student becomes hospitalized or has an illness to keep him/her home for an extended time, the parents should call the school office and arrange for assignments from the teachers. Upon return, the student must have a doctors excuse. For every day a student is absent, he/she has that number of days to make up missing work. For example, if a student is absent Monday and Tuesday, all work is due that Friday. If a student misses assignments, projects, quiz or test previously assigned before students absence; student is required to have dated assignments complete and be prepared for any projects, quizzes or test previously assigned. If a student is absent on scheduled test, quizzes, major projects ext. Student must bring in signed letter from guardian explaining absence upon return. If absent, it is the students responsibility to arrange time to meet with teacher and receive missing class work and homework. Grading Scale

****Any student receiving a grade below 59.5 will receive an F or an Incomplete. Field Trips Field Trips will occur about once a month. Students who have received three Behavior Notices home and/or referrals in one month will not be allowed to participate in the field trip for that month. Please be aware that this is up to teacher and administration discretion. I truly feel that each field trip scheduled is relevant to our curriculum and a necessary part to a well-rounded sixth grade experience. We are happy to have parents that would like to volunteer their valuable time to chaperone on these trips. If you are interested in being a chaperone, please contact me directly. Water Bottles Students are welcome to bring water bottles and refill them at the drinking fountain outside our classrooms. This will lessen classroom disruptions and maintain a productive learning environment. Bathroom Breaks Students will be allowed to use the restroom during their designated restroom time. In the case of a restroom emergency, I ask that students do their best to use the restroom at appropriate times during the day, such as between activities or during their lunch time. Cell Phone Policy/Parent Handbook Please note that students are not for any reason allowed to have a cell phone or other electronic device on school property. If a cell phone is found in school, it will be immediately confiscated and turned in to administration. Administration will then notify you when you will be able to pick up the cell phone. Consequences for having cell phones in school are cited in the Crescent Academy Parent/Student Handbook that can be found online at www.crescentacademycharterschool.com. Please note that only electronic copies of the handbook are available this school year.
