WIRELESS TRANSMISSION MEDIA

Unguided media transport electromagnetic waves without using a physical conductor. This type of communication is referred as

wireless communication.

Unguided signals can travel from source to

destination in several ways.

WIRELESS TRANSMISSION WAVES

RADIO WAVE
Electromagnetic

waves ranging in frequencies between 3KHz and 1 GHz. Is omnidirectional. This means when antenna transmits radio waves they are propogated in all directions. The sending and receiving antennas do not have to be aligned. Propagate in sky mode, can travel long distances.
Applications:
Useful

for multicasting. AM & FM radio,TV,cordless phones & paging.

MICROWAVE
Electromagnetic

waves having frequencies between 1 GHz and 300 GHz. Are unidirectional. Sending and receiving antennas need to be aligned. Use line-of-sight propagation. Repeaters are used for long distance commnuication. Use of certain portions of the band requires permission from authorities. Applications: Useful for unicast communication. Cellular telephones, satelite network & wireless LANs.

Microwave

needed unidirectional antennas

such as Dish antenna and Horn antenna

INFRARED
Electromagnetic

waves having frequencies 300 GHz to 400 GHz(wavelengths from 1mm to 770 nm). Can be used for short range communication. Uses line-of-sight propagation mode. It is unidirectional, having high frequency.
Applications: Its

wide bandwidth used for transmit digital data with a high data rate. Wireless keyboard, mouse, remote control etc.
