Classroom

Expectations:

My Classroom Economy:
My Classroom Economy is a form of classroom management that teaches financial responsibility. This is all woven throughout the year and does not take away from curriculum or teaching time. We will be using paper money not real money. Specifically, they are able to: Take part in a simulation of real-world economic activity. Learn the value of earning a paycheck, as they bank the salaries from their jobs. Learn how to budget their spending, balance a checking account, and make scheduled payments. Discover the importance of saving money to obtain what they want. Find out that every decision has an opportunity cost. At the end of every month, students will be able to take part in a class auction where they can use whatever left over money they have after paying their monthly bills. The first week of school, as a class, we will determine a list of bonuses and fines. Bonuses will be given for positive behaviors or accomplishments in class and around the campus. Fines will be given by the teacher for behaviors that take away from learning or create a negative classroom/school environment. They will also apply for classroom jobs and be trained on how to do them in the first two weeks.

Class I nformati on
Communication Open communication between parents and the teacher is very important to me. I consider parents an extension of my classroom. You know your child very well and I value the input and information that you can give me. I use email, telephone calls, and notes in order to facilitate communication. Let me know what works best for you. Lunch Money School lunches must be pre-ordered and pre-paid. Supplies Students must have supplies by Thursday, August 22nd. Students need to notify parents when they are out of supplies. Additional whole class supplies will be needed throughout the year for various projects. You will be notified of those needs at that time. Donations As a part of MyClassroomEconomy, we will be having monthly auctions where students will be able to purchase prizes with their classroom money. Any prize donations would be greatly appreciated. These could include, but are not limited to small toys, sports balls, pencils, erasers, CDs/DVDs, iTunes gift cards, coupons or gift cards to local businesses, movie tickets, autographs, etc. Our classroom library can always use extra novels. Students are always welcome to check out books from my classroom library. If you have any novels in any genre that you would like to donate, that would be greatly appreciated!

Grades Grades will be given for each subject. They will be earned by test scores, homework, individual/group projects, class participation, oral presentations, and citizenship. I will be using Jupiter Grades. You have the option of receiving text alerts each week for missing assignments, grades, and also behavior issues. Grade Breakdown Class work/Homework 40% Tests/Quizzes/Projects 40% Participation/Citizenship 20% Grading System 90-100% A 80-89% B 70-79% C 60-69% D 0-59% F Projects, both individual and group, will have a rubric or checklist attached so you and your child will know the expectations of the assignment. Homework A Student Planner will be used to record daily objectives and class/homework assignments. This is a school-wide practice and will require a parent signature daily. If work is not completed in class, then it will become homework. This will be noted in their planner and will be initialed by the teacher. When homework is assigned, it will be noted in their planner and will only be assigned Monday thru Thursday. Students will be expected to read 20 minutes at home daily, including Friday, Saturday & Sunday. There also may be work to do on weekends when a project has been assigned. Absences Students will have one extra day per day missed to complete assignments when absent. 1 day absent = 1 extra day to turn in assignments. For example, if a student is gone on Monday and is back Tuesday, the work they missed will be due on Wednesday. I will email homework assignments when contacted by a parent. Getting behind in assignments is strongly discouraged. Please contact me for additional assistance if need be.

Late work If an assignment is missing or incomplete, it will be noted and the parent will be informed via a Jupiter text message notification. Plus, 10% will be deducted from the grade they receive on the assignment for each day it is late. Late assignments go in the late basket. Two or more missing/late assignments in one week will invoke a phone call or email from me to the parent. Students will be fined in accordance with MyClassroomEconomy for each missing or incomplete assignment. If class work is not completed in class, it becomes homework for that night and is due first thing in the morning. Tardiness/Absences School starts promptly at 8:30 am. Please be on time for school to have a successful day. Please minimize absences. Even one missed day hinders continual learning and growth for a student. Group projects will suffer if students are absent. Notify office and email me ASAP if your child will be missing school. Dress Code Please review the Parent/Student Handbook with your child. All of the policies in the handbook, this document, and additional classroom rules will be followed and enforced. We want everyone to have a safe and effective learning environment. Reading A reading program will begin the third week of school. Your child is expected to read 20 minutes a night until then. The Common Core Standards for sixth grade states that the students are to read more informational text as well as other genres. * Fantasy * Realistic Fiction * Mystery * Historical Fiction * Science Fiction * Informational * Biography * Autobiography * Poetry * Traditional Literature
