About this course...


Welcome! In this course, you will be introduced to the foundations of college reading and writing, which is, in many ways, very different from h igh school writing. If you found that you were not a very strong writer in high school, dont fret! You can think of this class as a clean slate. The goal is to give you the skills you will need to understand what college professors expect when it comes to reading, writing, completing your assignments, and participating in classroom activities and d iscussions.

Bring all current and previous assignments to class each dayhold on to all work handed back to you with my comments All assigned work will be DUE the NEXT DAY Always back up your work; lost assignments will not be excused I do not accept e mailed assignments; please, do not ask me I do not accept late work; please, do not ask me If you are absent, you may turn it in the next class Read all prompts carefully and follow directions Each assignment should have a header with the following: YOUR NAME Foundations Liberal Arts: Frederick THE DATE NAME OF THE ASSIGNMENT

Practice Work: daily assigned homework that helps us practice our reading and writing Professionalism: classroom and group participation, professional e mails, classroom etiquette, following directions, self- responsibility, etc.

Portfolio Inclusions:
Foundations for College Writing is a Pass/Fail course. If you pass or fail is determined by your portfolio. Your portfolio should show that you have demonstrated learning the foundations of college writing, as well as the foundations of the writing process. Revised Essay 1 with all previous drafts Revised Essay 2 with all previous drafts Self-Analysis Statement

Course Objectives
1. Students will utilize familiar foundations of personal writing to negotiate and learn basic writing skills and source use. 2. With guided readings, students will learn the foundations of reading comprehension and source use, including:

what to value when reading a text (traditional text or new media) annotation paraphrase and summary informal citation analysis

3. With guided writing exercises, students will learn the foundations of essay writing, including:

Attendance:
You are allotted 6 absences. If you exceed this number, excused or unexcused, you will be asked to withdraw from the course with a WF (withdraw failing) distinction. You may read the entire First-Year Writing attendance policy HERE. If you are absent:
- DO e mail me to let me know - DO NOT e mail me your assignment; bring hard copy next class unless otherwise directed - DO check the website and Facebook page - DO e mail after you have check the website and before 6 PM - DO NOT expect being absent to be an excuse for not doing your work or taking steps to access and understand missed material
