Centru za razvojna vrednotenja (CRV) na Fakulteti za strojnitvo smo pred desetletjem dolgorono povezali raziskovalno-razvojno delo Laboratorija za vrednotenje konstrukcij LAVEK z razvojno-raziskovalnimi oddelki podjetij Cimos, d.d., Hella Lux Slovenija, d. o. o., TPV, d. d., in drugih partnerjev. Nae in tuje doseke razvoja temeljnega znanja smo v medsebojnih dolgoronih pogodbah povezali z aplikativnimi cilji ter zato zdruili finanna sredstva, kadre in opremo. Projekt Student Roadster smo zaeli leta 2000. Skupaj s tudentsko skupino vijih letnikov univerzitetne smeri Konstruiranje in mehanika smo na osnovi osebnega vozila, ki nam ga je doniral Peugeot Slovenija, razdelali celoten razvojni postopek pretvorbe vozila v razliico roadster. Naslednja leta je 40 tudentov na najsodobneji razvojni opremi v Centru za razvojna vrednotenja izvedlo vse stopnje razvojnega postopka, vkljuno s homologacijo novega vozila. Student Roadster morda kot vozilo res ni ni posebnega. Ves projekt, vloeno inenirsko znanje in delo tudentov, pedagogov in strokovnjakov iz prakse pa ima zaradi oblike in rezultatov sodelovanja ter znanj, ki smo jih vsi pridobili, izjemen pomen. tudentje so v svojih poroilih za vaje, v seminarjih, projektnih nalogah, diplomskih seminarjih in diplomah dokazali, da obvladajo sodobno raziskovalno-razvojno tehnologijo in opremo, po diplomi pa so profesionalno pot v praksi zaeli s konkretnim in aktualnim inenirskim znanjem. Podiplomski tudentje so aplikativno vrednost svojega doprinosa k novemu znanju lahko dokazovali na konkretnem primeru razvoja izdelka. FISITA, svetovno zdruenje na podroju avtomobilske industrije, je projekt Student Roadster izbralo v nabor petih projektov odlinosti, ki bodo predstavljeni na svetovnem kongresu FISITA 2008 v Mnchnu. Za vse, ki smo sodelovali v omenjenem projektu, je to posebna ast in veliko priznanje ter potrditev, da smo uspeni. V projektni skupini verjamemo, da moramo tudi slovenski javnosti pokazati svoje rezultate in tako dokazati, da na univerzi uspeno povezujemo raziskovalno in izobraevalno delo ter da smo uspeni pri povezovanju univerze z gospodarstvom in drubo.

decade ago, the Centre for Development Evaluation (CRV) at the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering, established a long-term connection between the research and development work in the Laboratory for Structure Evaluation LAVEK and the research and development departments in companies Cimos, d. d., Hella Lux Slovenija, d. o. o., TPV, d. d., and other partners. We have linked our and their achievements in the development of fundamental knowledge to applicative goals through mutual long-term contracts, incorporating financial means, staff and equipment for this purpose. We have begun with the Student Roadster project in 2000. Together with a group of senior students from the university course on Design and Mechanics we have worked out the whole development process of converting a vehicle to roadster version, working on a personal vehicle donated by Peugeot Slovenija. In the years to follow, 40 students worked on state-of-the-art equipment in the Centre for Development Evaluation to carry out all stages of development, including the type approval for the new vehicle. A Student Roadster may not be something special as a vehicle. But the whole project, the invested engineering know-how and the work of students, teachers and experts from the industry have an exceptional meaning, considering the form and results of cooperation as well as the knowledge we have all gained. The students have proven through their exercise reports, seminars, project assignments, diploma seminars and thesises that they have mastered modern research and development technology and equipment, and after the graduation they have begun their professional career with a solid and up-todate engineering knowledge. Postgraduate students were able to prove the applicative value of their contributions to new knowledge on a concrete example of product development. FISITA, the International Federation of Automotive Engineering Societies, has chosen the Student Roadster project for a set of five projects of excellence that will be presented on the FISITA 2008 world congress in Munich. This is a great honour and recognition of success for everyone who has taken part in the project. The project group believe that we have to present our results to the Slovenian public and prove that the faculty is successfully linking up research with educational work, as well as that we are successful in connecting the faculty to economy and society.

Ustvarjamo, ker znamo ...


Fakulteta za strojnitvo in ostale lanice Univerze v Ljubljani e dolgo zelo uspeno uresniujejo svoje poslanstvo: razvoj novega znanja ter izobraevanje in usposabljanje tudentov na dodiplomskem in podiplomskem tudiju. V Sloveniji nam mednarodno primerljive uspehe al preskromno in redko priznavajo. Verjetno tudi zato, ker na univerzi sicer pridno delamo, z rezultati pa se redko pohvalimo.

Faculty of Mechanical Engineering and other members of University of Ljubljana have been successfully realising their mission for a long time: to develop new knowledge, educate and qualify the students on graduate and postgraduate studies. Unfortunately, our internationally comparable success is not getting enough recognition in Slovenia. This is probably because we work hard at the university, but we rarely boast of our results.

Globalizacija postavlja razvoju zelo visoke cilje, zato je za drubo pomembno, da znamo v proces vkljuiti prav vse, ki imajo znanje in zamisli. To pomeni tudi bolj zaupati pobudam in podjetnosti dravljanov. Pri tem ima Evropa v primerjavi z ZDA velik primanjkljaj, ki postaja v tekmi z igralci, kot sta Indija in Kitajska, e bolj opazen. Evropa se mora nasloniti na ustvarjalnost svojih ljudi in na svojo bogato kulturno dediino, kot smo zapisali v prenovljeni Lizbonski strategiji. Prav zato so projekti, kot je Student Roadster, izjemno pomembni.

rojects like the Student Roadster demonstrate creativity, innovation and the enterprising spirit of students. However, these characteristics are lacking here and we should encourage them in young people. Globalization sets high goals for development and this is why it is important for societies to know how to include everyone with knowledge and ideas in the process, which also means trusting the initiative and enterprising spirit of the citizens more. All Europe has a major deficit in this in comparison with the USA for example, and in competition with players such as India and China it is even more noticeable. Europe must lean on the creativeness of its own people and its rich cultural heritage as we have written in the renewed Lisbon strategy. This is why projects as the Student Roadster are of such importance.

Slednje poskuamo navduiti z idejo, da med tudijem nabirajo razlina bazina znanja, ki so uporabna tudi za ire drubeno okolje. Skupini tudentov pod vodstvom mentorja prof. dr. Fajdige je uspela prav tovrstna zdruitev teoretinega znanja in praktinih izkuenj. S skupnimi momi so tudenti in uitelji, s partnerji iz gospodarstva, pri projektu Student Roadster uspeli te ideale uresniiti v praksi. Na projekt sem zelo ponosna in elim si, da bi se po njem zgledovali tudi drugi lani akademske skupnosti uiteljev in tudentov Univerze v Ljubljani.

We are trying to make them enthusiastic about ideas that they gain during their time of studying various basic knowledge areas that are also applicable to the wider social environment. The group of students, under the direction of mentor professor doctor Fajdiga, succeeded in precisely this kind of fusion of theoretical knowledge and practical experience. With a common drive, students and teachers, with help of the economic partners, succeeded in practically realizing these ideals in the Student Roadster project. I am very proud of this project and I hope that other members of the academic community of teachers and students at the University of Ljubljana will follow it.

Ko razvoj postane trdna beseda, in ne dnevna puhlica


rojekti, ki navdihujejo zamisli e v tudentskih letih, so izjemna dobrina za vse. tudentje lahko utrdijo upravienost tudija in razvoja svojega inenirskega talenta, profesorja pa utrdijo v njegovem poslanstvu. Fakulteta dokazuje trdno in celovito vpetost tako v vsakdanje okolje kot tudi na izobraevalnem in razvojnoraziskovalnem podroju. Drava pa se utrjuje v okolju civilizacije, ki ji pripada. Tako postane razvoj trdna beseda, in ne dnevna puhlica. Profesorski zbor, zbor raziskovalcev Fakultete za strojnitvo, pozdravlja vsak doseek kolega in njegove skupine. e so v tak doseek vkljueni tudi tudenti, je to najlepi dokaz, da na tej fakulteti ni zaprtega, od sodobnega ivljenja odmaknjenega znanja. Fakulteta za strojnitvo predstavlja sodobno fakulteto, saj je ve kot 55 odstotkov njenih prihodkov iz naslova raziskovalnega dela.

Students can justify their studies and the development of their engineering talent and also support the professors in their mission. The faculty demonstrates a solid and complete inclusion, not only in the daily environment, but also in the educational and developmental research sphere. At the same time. the country is strengthening the environment of the civilization it belongs to. Development thus becomes a solid word, not just an everyday clich. The professional chair and the researchers of the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering welcomes every achievement by a colleague and his group. If the students have also contributed to this achievement it is the best proof that distant knowledge, shut off from contemporary life doesnt exist in this faculty. The Faculty of Mechanical Engineering represents a modern faculty, as more than 55 percent of its incomes derives from research work.

Avtomobilska stroka niso le rne umazane roke


ri Peugeotu se zavedamo problematike pomanjkanja tehninega kadra na avtomobilskem podroju, emur namenjamo precej pozornosti. Mladim je treba pokazati, da je avtomobilska stroka zelo raznolika in da delo na tem podroju pomeni e kaj drugega kot le rne umazane roke. Hkrati z veseljem opaamo, da sta olanje in izobraevanje na tehninem podroju v Sloveniji kakovostni. Ponosni smo, da smo pred leti zaeli sodelovati s Fakulteto za strojnitvo v Ljubljani, ki je zagotovo dober primer sodelovanja med avtomobilsko industrijo in izobraevalno ustanovo. elimo in upamo, da bodo taka in podobna sodelovanja dober zgled tako podjetjem in ustanovam kot tudi mladim, ki razmiljajo o nadaljnji poti svoje kariere.

Automotive profession is far more than just getting your hands dirty

The young should be showed that the automotive industry is very diverse, and that work in this field is far more than just getting your hands dirty. At the same time, we are glad to notice the high quality of technical education in Slovenia. We are proud of our cooperation with the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering in Ljubljana that started years ago, and this is undoubtedly a good example of cooperation between the automotive industry and an educational institution. We wish and hope that such cooperations will set an example for companies and institutions, as well as for the young who are considering the future course of their careers.

Za dolgorono uinkovitost in uspenost je poleg rok in glave potrebno dati tudi srce. Mladi strokovnjaki so srce naega podjetja. Zagotavljajo dinamiko v razvoju, premagujejo izzive in soustvarjajo procese na globalnem trgu. V kolikor jih znamo motivirati in podpreti, lahko svoje ideje uspeno pretvorijo v trno zanimive produkte. Student Roadster je zagotovo eden od njih.

Our manufacturing system is based on young professionals


e are building a manufacturing system that is based on a community of scientists, who make a series of assumptions that can in turn be tested. In other words: they use completely scientific work methods. To achieve long-term effectiveness and successfulness, the hands and the head have to be complemented by the heart. Young professionals are the heart of our company. They provide for the dynamics in the development, overcome challenges and co-create processes in the global market. If we know how to motivate and support them, they are able to successfully transform their ideas to marketable products. Student Roadster is undoubtedly one of them.

Ideje za avtomobile prihodnosti

Slogan naega koncerna Ideje za avtomobile prihodnosti pa mu popolnoma ustreza. utimo se odgovorne nai drubi in mladim, da podpiramo tudije in sorodne dejavnosti, elimo pa tudi privabiti mlade inenirje, ki so pridobili svojo izobrazbo na najboljih slovenskih univerzah, da bi delali v mednarodnem okolju. Kot Saturnus smo postali del industrijske zgodovine in od leta 1921 vedno gojili sodobno inenirstvo. Znotraj koncerna Hella Group smo pristojno sredie za razvoj, industrializacijo in proizvodnjo meglenk. Poleg tega izdelujemo tudi aromete in signalne svetilke. Nae stranke so znani veliki avtomobilski proizvajalci, pa tudi izdelovalci eksotinih portnih avtomobilov. Za izgradnjo naega uspeha potrebujemo le najbolje inenirje. Ideje za avtomobile prihodnosti ali Bolj kot preteklost me zanima prihodnost, saj v njej nameravam iveti, kot je dejal Einstein.

We feel responsible towards our society and youth to support studies and related activities and we wish to attract young engineers educated by the best Slovenian universities to work in an international environment. As Saturnus, we have become a part of industrial history and since 1921 we have always fostered modern engineering. Within Hella Group, we are the Fog Lamp Competence Centre for development, industrialisation and production. Our other products are headlamps and signal lamps. Our customers are the famous mass producers as well exotic sports car builders. For the design of our success, we only need the best engineers, Ideas for the cars of tomorrow or, as Einstein said: More than in the past I am interested in the future, because I intend to live there.

podjetju Akrapovi se zavedamo, kako pomembna je povezava med gospodarstvom in akademsko sfero. V slovenskem prostoru se premalo opiramo na prednosti, ki jih imamo kot majhen narod. Majhnost namre pomeni tudi vejo fleksibilnost in prilagodljivost razmeram na globalnem trgu, ustrezne povezave med raziskovalno dejavnostjo, akademsko sfero, razlinimi strokami in gospodarstvom pa omogoajo prave trne preboje. V procesu globalne tekme bi moralo zato gospodarstvo iz akademske sfere bolj pogosto rpati nabor temeljnih znanj, jih oplemenititi s svojimi izkunjami in jih implementirane izkoristiti kot trne prednosti. Student Roadster nakazuje tako sodelovanje, zato velja nameniti estitke vsem, ki so sodelovali pri tem zanimivem projektu.

Dear friends and participants of Student Roadster project!


In company Akrapovi we are well aware how important are the connections between the economy and the academic sphere. It is a fact that in Slovenia we are not building enough on the advantages that we have as a small nation. Being small also means better flexibility and adaptability to conditions on the global market, while proper connections between research institutions, academic sphere, various professions and the economy enable real market breakthroughs. In the process of global competition, the economy should therefore more often draw fundamental knowledge from the academic sphere, refine it with its own experience and implement it as market advantages. Student Roadster is a model of such cooperation, so congratulations are in order to everyone who took part in this interesting project.

Donirano vozilo je bilo najprej demontirano, vsi vitalni sklopi pa so bili premerjeni. Na sliki so Janez Kunavar, Marko Hrovat, Pavel Furlan in Uro Rosa, ki so sodelovali pri demontai. Donacija avtomobila Peugeot 406 podjetja Peugeot Slovenija, d. o. o., ki je bil mehanska osnova gradnje novega prototipa. Donacija je bila zaetek projekta. Skupino so takrat sestavljali (na sliki z leve proti desni): Miha Otrin, Pavel Furlan, Uro Rosa, Marjan Grah in Janez Kunavar. Donation of the Peugeot 406 Peugeot Slovenija, d. o. o. This car was the mechanical basis for the construction of the new prototype. This donation was the start of the project. O konceptu, konstrukciji in obliki


Avtomobil je bil koncipiran od znotraj navzven: okoli mehanskih sklopov je bila na novo narejena ergonomija kabine, okoli nje in sklopov nosilna konstrukcija, nato pa e oblika. Veina mehanskih sklopov in elektronika so vzete iz peugeota 406. Povsem na novo je zasnovana nosilna konstrukcija, ki je koncipirana kot space-frame iz treh glavnih modulov: sprednjega dela, kabine in zadnjega dela. Tako smo dosegli enostavno konstrukcijo z razmeroma veliko vzvojno togostjo glede na tip vozila. S cevmi in krivljeno ploevino smo dosegli malo sestavnih delov in enostavno prilagodljivost konstrukcije za razline mehanske konfiguracije. Do konne razliice je bila dolga pot z veliko optimizacijskih korakov in numerinih simulacij. Oblika vozila je bila poseben izziv, saj sem elel dosei atraktivno obliko, ki izareva mladost in portni znaaj ter ni le stilski eksperiment. elel sem si, da bi bil avto prepoznaven po nekaj samosvojih edinstvenih potezah, ki bi zaznamovale celotno obliko in vse elemente zdruile v usklajeno celoto. Projekt je povezal akademsko sfero z industrijo in dal vsem, ki smo v njem delali, neizmerno veliko izkuenj na podroju konstruiranja, vrednotenja kostrukcij ter izdelovanja prototipov. Prav vsi, ki smo bili aktivni v projektu, smo spoznali, da moramo za uspeen projekt delovati kot dobro uigran orkester, kjer so vsi intrumenti med seboj usklajeni, e elimo, da je skladba vrhunsko odigrana. Preprian sem, da se je v projektu Student Roadster oblikovala dobra ekipa ljudi, ki so drzni, se ne bojijo izzivov in delujejo kot homogena celota za dosego skupnih ciljev. Organizacija in usklajevanje aktivnosti vseh lanov skupine, partnerskih podjetji, aktivnosti na Srednji strojni oli ter veliko drugih podizvajalcev sta bila kar velik izziv, ki je na koncu pripeljal do izdelka, na katerega smo vsi ponosni. Na njem se je urilo skoraj 40 tudentov, ki so s projektnim delom pripravljeni na izzive, ki jih akajo ob zaposlitvi v gospodarstvu.

About the concept, structure and design


The vehicle was planned from the inside to outwards: around mechanical components the ergonomy of the cabin was newly made, around it and supporting structure and after that the exterior and interior design. The greater part of mechanical components and electronic are taken from Peugeot 406. The supporting frame is completely newly designed and is projected as space-frame of three main modules: the front part, the cabin and the rear part. This way a simple design with relatively high torsional stiffness was accomplished in comparison with the vehicles of the same type. With use of tubes and curved sheet metal we achieved a low number of parts and simple adaptability of the supporting frame for various mechanical configurations. It was a long way to the final version during which several optimizing steps and numerical simulations were made. The exterior and interior design of the vehicle was a special challenge as I wanted to achieve an attractive apperance that radiates youth and sportivitiy and isnt just a style experiment. I wanted a vehicle to be recognizable by few original and unique lines that would mark the whole form and unite all of the elements in a harmonic totality. The project connected an academic sphere with industry and gave immense experience in the sphere of constructing, development evaluations and making prototypes to all who worked on it. Each one of us who has actively participated in this project has realized that in order to have a successfull project we have to work as well-trained orchestra where all of the instruments are mutually harmonized and carefully directed, if we want the composition to be topmost played. Im sure that in the project Student Roadster united a good team of people who are daring, not afraid of challenges and are working as homogeneous whole in order to achieve common goals. Organization and reconciliation of activities of all members of the group, partner enterprises, activities on High school of Mechanical Engineering and a lot of other executants was a big organizational challenge which was in the end demonstrated by a product which were all proud of. In this project almost 40 students were trained with case-study methods and are now ready to take the chalanges waitng for them in the industry.

Constructional and analytical tasks were carried out in the computer classroom of the LAVEK laboratory at the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering. Mere, pridobljene z atrapo, so bile prenesene v raunalniki 3D-model, in sicer s programskim paketom CATIA V5. The measurements acquired from the mock-up were then loaded into a computer 3-D model using the CATIA V5 software package.

The supporting structure is designed as a modular space-frame, which enables simple adaptation for use in different concepts. Uro Rosa was awarded the Preerens Prize from the faculty for this design.

Analysis of the vehicles supporting structure


Computer simulations were an important part of the development of the unique Student Roadster vehicle, as certain tests cannot be carried out on the final product. My contribution to making the vehicle was the computer analyses when the product was still in the development phase. I studied how the vehicle would react to different loadings that would occur during driving. I focused mainly on how the supporting structure of the vehicle would react to these loadings. Determining the appropriate supporting structure for the vehicle is an important part of car-development, as the driving characteristics, road stability and traffic safety of the vehicle all depend on it. An important characteristic of the supporting frame is the highest possible torsional and bending stiffness. Several different numerical calculations were made to determine the stiffness and this demanded a lot of work as the supporting structure of the vehicle consists of many different parts connected with different welds. The thread and bending stiffness of the structure were determined and compared with the stiffness of other vehicles. I also considered different conditions that might occur during driving and took the following into consideration: driving over obstructions, driving on a road with potholes, starting, braking and different combinations of these loadings. By doing this, I determined the stress and strain states of the front part of the supporting structure and the wheel arms. It was a pleasure to participate in this project, and I would like to congratulate the entire team, who invested a lot of hard word work and persistence and managed to create a very beautiful car.

Za vozilo Student Roadster, ki je unikatno vozilo, so raunalnike simulacije pomemben del razvoja, saj nekaterih preizkusov na konnem izdelku ne moremo izvesti. Moj prispevek k izdelavi vozila se je nanaal na del raunalnikih analiz, ko je izdelek e na stopnji razvoja. Ukvarjal sem se s tem, kako se bo vozilo odzivalo na razline obremenitve, ki se pojavijo med vonjo. Predvsem sem se osredotoil na to, kako se bo na obremenitve odzivala nosilna konstrukcija vozila. Ugotavljanje ustreznosti nosilne konstrukcije vozila je pomemben del razvoja avtomobila, saj so od nje odvisne vozne lastnosti, lega vozila na cesti, pa tudi varnost v cestnem prometu. Zelo pomembna lastnost nosilnega okvirja je im veja vzvojna in upogibna togost. Za ugotavljanje togosti je bilo izvedenih ve razlinih numerinih izraunov, ki so zahtevali veliko dela, saj je nosilna konstrukcija vozila sestavljena iz veliko razlinih nosilnih delov, med seboj povezanimi z razlinimi zvarnimi spoji. Ugotovljeni sta bili vzvojna in upogibna togost konstrukcije, ki sta bili primerjani s togostmi drugih vozil. Obravnaval sem tudi razline pogoje, do katerih lahko pride med vonjo, in upoteval naslednje dogodke: vonja ez ovire, vonja po jamasti cesti, speljevanje, zaviranje in razline kombinacije natetih obremenitev. Pri tem sem ugotovil napetostna in deformacijska stanja sprednjega dela nosilne konstrukcije skupaj z obesami koles. V veselje mi je bilo sodelovati pri tem projektu, estitam pa celotni ekipi, ki je z vztrajnostjo in veliko vloenega truda uspela sestaviti zelo lep avtomobil.

One of the most demanding analyses was the analysis of a collision to the front part of the car. Our prematurely departed colleague Marjan Grah began work in the field of collisions and Ana Bial continued his work, as well as carrying out an analysis of the front bumper.

On the construction and analysis of the safety belt fastenings


I worked on the construction and analysis of the safety belt fastenings. We had to fasten safety belts in the passenger cabin in accordance with the current legislation. With help of linear and non-linear numerical analysis in the diploma for every fastening made, we improved the individual fastenings. The most suitable design was then realized. I am very proud to be a part of this project and that what I contributed to the realization of this car will crucially contribute to the improved safety of the passengers.

On constructing the interior and the numerical simulations of the crash test
As the interior of the vehicle is the part that every user has the most contact with, it is important that it is pleasing. The surfaces must have attractive forms and must be covered with pleasant material, while the form must be functionally and ergonomically constructed. From a technical point of view, safety is one of more important characteristics of a vehicle. In car manufacture, the behaviour of a vehicle in a crash is demonstrated by executing a crash test, but as the Student Roadster vehicle is just a prototype, its safety performances can only be shown through numerical simulation. The crash test is also important as a certificate of the adequacy of a vehicle by homologation. To use theoretical experience in practice, realize new ideas, gain new knowledge through work, solve real problems and improve existing solutions, all of this is invaluable experience for everybody on the project; the Student Roadster has made things possible that make us better engineers.

Ukvarjal sem se s konstrukcijo in analizo pritrdi varnostnih pasov. Varnostne pasove je bilo treba umestiti v potniko kabino v skladu z veljavno zakonodajo. Za vsako pritrdie smo v diplomski nalogi z linearnimi in nelinearnimi numerinimi analizami izdelali konstrukcijsko izboljavo. Najprimerneja konstrukcija je bila nato tudi dejansko izvedena. Ponosen sem na to, da sem del tega projekta in da je v tem avtomobilu tudi moj prispevek, ki bo odloilno pripomogel k veji varnosti potnikov.

Ker je notranjost avtomobila tista, s katero ima vsak uporabnik najve stika, je pomembno, da mu je ve. Povrine morajo imeti privlane oblike, prekrite morajo biti s prijetnim materialom, sama oblika pa mora biti funkcionalna in ergonomina. S tehninega vidika je varnost ena od vedno bolj izstopajoih lastnosti avtomobila. Obnaanje vozila v primeru trka se v avtomobilski industriji pokae s t. i. crash testom. Ker je vozilo Student Roadster prototip, je njegove varnostne lastnosti mogoe pokazati samo z numerino simulacijo. Preizkus trka je pomemben tudi za izkaz ustreznosti vozila pri homologaciji. Priueno teorijo izkusiti v praksi, uresniiti nove zamisli, z delom pridobivati nova znanja, reevati resnine probleme in izboljevati obstojee reitve je neprecenljiva izkunja za vsakega. Projekt Student Roadster nam je omogoil prav to, kar nas danes dela bolje inenirje.

V izdelavo varilne priprave so bili vkljueni tudi dijaki Srednje strojne ole v Ljubljani. Tako smo uspeli v projektnem delu povezati dijake srednje ole in tudente. In this way we managed to include both high-school and faculty students in the project work.

The installation of the mechanical assemblies into the prototype


Fitting the different assemblies was a relatively demanding part of the project, especially regarding their positioning and related functionality. Fitting standard parts was a challenge, especially because of the different design of the car, with certain gauges being changed in comparison to the basic limousine version. One of the main elements was definitely the rear and the front suspension and the rear arm, i.e. the rear multi-link suspension technology. The standard suspension was replaced by a different type of suspension the FKs suspension with mechanically adjustable height. This was no doubt the most rational solution as our version is different to the original limousine in many respects, including the weight of the final prototype. Using an inappropriate sports chassis could result in poor road stability and an inadequate responsiveness to bumps and, consequently, the unsatisfactory driveability of the car. The installation of the engine and the gearbox, the installation of all the electrical components and the positioning of the engine electronics also represented great challenges.

Montaa raznih sklopov je bila razmeroma zahteven del projekta, predvsem glede natannosti pozicioniranja in s tem funkcionalnosti posameznih sklopov. Montiranje standardnih delov je predstavljalo izziv, predvsem zaradi drugane zasnove avtomobila, saj so bili spremenjeni nekateri gabariti glede na osnovno limuzinsko razliico. Eden glavnih elementov sta bila nedvomno sprednja in zadnja prema s posaminimi obesami oziroma vevodilno tehnologijo zadaj. Standardno vzmetenje je bilo nadomeeno z druganim tipom vzmetenja, FK-jevim, po viini mehansko nastavljivim vzmetenjem. Za na prototip je bila to verjetno najbolj smotrna izbira, saj je naa razliica glede na originalno limuzino drugana v ve pogledih, med drugim tudi v masi konnega prototipa, kar bi ob uporabi neprimernega portnega podvozja povzroilo slabo lego na cestiu in premajhno odzivnost na neravnine, zato pa tudi nezadostno vodljivost avtomobila. Velik izziv so bili e montaa motornega agregata, menjalnika in namestitev vseh elektrinih vodov ter pozicioniranje motorne elektronike.

Obdelava zunanjosti in barvanje

The treatment of the exterior and the colouring


Transferring a 3-D model of a car into reality is a great challenge. We made the car-body in a rather unusual manner that is not appropriate for serial production, but is ideal for making prototype vehicles. We first covered the entire car with large fastened blocks of non-flammable polyurethane foam. From this huge block, we then milled out the shape of the car using CNC-machines and 3-D models and hardened it with glass fibres filled with polyester resin. We then puttied and thoroughly grined the surface and thus removed all unevenness and faults in the top layer. The process of painting the surface consisted of several steps additional puttying and grinding, applying spray putty, applying the foundation base, the black colour, the pearl layer, lacquering, polishing and detailing. The final result of this four-month process is a completely unique shape and a prototype vehicle coloured an attractive black that refracts in the sun into a rainbow from different viewing angles.

Prenos 3D-modela avtomobila v resnini svet je zelo velik izziv. Karoserijo smo izdelali na precej nenavaden nain, ki ni primeren za serijsko proizvodnjo, je pa idealen za izdelavo prototipnih vozil. Celoten avtomobil smo najprej obloili in opasali z velikimi bloki negorljive poliuretanske pene. Iz te ogromne kocke smo s CNC-stroji in 3D-modeli izfrezali obliko avtomobila in jo utrdili s steklenimi vlakni, zalitimi s poliestrsko smolo. Nato smo povrino skitali in temeljito obrusili ter tako odstranili neravnine in napake v vrhnjem sloju. Postopek barvanja povrine je obsegal ve korakov, kot so dodatno fino kitanje in bruenje, nanos kita za brizganje, temeljne podlage, rne barve, sloja perl, lakiranje, poliranje in detajliranje. Konni rezultat tirimesenega postopka izdelave karoserije je povsem unikatna oblika oziroma prototipno vozilo, pobarvano z zelo privlano rno barvo, ki se na soncu in z razlinih zornih kotov spreminja v mavrico.

Fina obdelava in izravnavanje povrine sta potekala s poliuretanskimi kiti razline trdote in z razlinimi naini nanosa. Fine treatment and levelling of the surfaces were made with polyurethane putties of different hardness and by different methods of application.

V zakljunem delu projekta je bilo veliko truda vloenega v pripravo avtomobila na barvanje. Izravnava povrin je bila kompleksna, pri tem je sodelovala vsa skupina, na pomo pa nam je priskoil tudi industrijski oblikovalec Igor Rosa.

Na dele zunanjosti so bila ukrojena steklena vlakna, ki so bila nato vakuumsko laminirana za doseganje ustrezne trdnosti in kompaktnosti. Glass fibre material was cut out to fit parts of the exterior, and then vacuum-laminated to achieve adequate strength and compactness.

In the final part of the project a lot of work was put into preparing the car for painting. Levelling of the surfaces was complex, and not only did the whole team participate, we also got help from industrial designer Igor Rosa.

Za projekt Student Roadster sem izvedel konec drugega letnika, ko sem skupaj s soolci opravljal enomeseno prakso v laboratoriju LAVEK. Takrat si nisem predstavljal, da bo avto sploh kdaj izdelan. Za projekt sem se bolj resno zael zanimati lani, ko so avto pripravljali za konferenco IAT 07, ekipi pa sem se nato pridruil oktobra. Seminarja ali nalog z analizami v tem projektu nisem imel, sem pa pomagal pri izdelavi karoserije in montai posameznih delov. Dela ni nikoli zmanjkalo in pomo je bila vedno dobrodola. V veliko veselje mi je bilo delati v tem projektu, saj sem izvedel veliko novega in zanimivega. Hvala celotni zdajnji ekipi, da so me sprejeli in mi tako popestrili peti letnik tudija strojnitva.

About the work on the project


I have found out about the project Student Roadster at the end of 2nd year, when I and my schoolmates were on our one-month practice in the LAVEK laboratory. At that time I could not imagine that the vehicle will ever be made. I became more interested in the project last year, when the vehicle was to be prepared for the conference IAT 07 and I joined the team in October. I didnt have any seminar or assignment involving analyses for this project, but I helped with the making of the car body and assembly of various parts. There was always a lot of work and help was appreciated. I was delighted to work on this project and I found out a lot of new and interesting things. I would like to thank to all members of the current team for accepting me and by doing so making the 5th year of my studies of mechanical engineering more entertaining.

Zaradi goriva v krvi in veselja do vonje po asfaltu sem se odloil za delo v avtomobilski industriji in se zaposlil v oddelku za razvoj svetlobne opreme v podjetju Hella Lux Slovenija, d. o. o., ki je tudi sponzoriralo projekt z izdelavo sprednjih arometov in nabavo svetlobne opreme za zadnji del avtomobila. Tudi zato je bil moj prispevek k projektu Student Roadster ve kot primeren in enostaven, saj gre za moje vsakodnevno delo. Moja naloga je bila zasnovati, razviti in izdelati aromete za roadsterja. Delo se je odvijalo v sinergiji z vodjo projekta in stilistom Uroem Roso, ki mi je vsak trenutek, ko sem ga potreboval, priskoil na pomo. Stilsko zasnovo sva naredila z Uroem skupaj, razvoj in izdelavo pa sem izpeljal s sodelavci v podjetju. Menim, da je izdelek tehnino zelo dobra reitev, ki bi jo z nadaljnjim razvojem lahko e izboljali, e bi bilo na voljo vsaj e nekaj asa, ki ga sicer v razvoju vedno manjka. arometi so se zelo dobro zlili s karoserijo, avto pa je videti odlino. Vsi, ki so sodelovali pri izdelavi, zasluijo pohvalo, stisk roke in odlino slubo, saj so odlino opravili tudi svoje delo.

On the development and design of headlamps


I have always been a passionate admirer of cars, thats why I feel great when I sit in a more exotic car and drive down an almost empty road. Because of fuel in the blood and the joy of driving on asphalt, I started to work in the car industry and got a job in the department for the development of light equipment in the enterprise Hella Lux Slovenija ltd., who also sponsors the project on the making of the front headlamps and the supply of light equipment for rear part of the car. For these reasons, my contribution to the Student Roadster project was more than basic as I perform this work every day. My task was to plan, develop and design the headlamps for the roadster. Work was performed in synergy with the manager of the project and the stylist Uro Rosa, who has offered help at every moment when I needed him. The style plan was made by Uro and me together and the development and design was performed by me and my co-workers in the enterprise. In my opinion, the product is technically a very good solution, which could be improved with further development if there was some more time which is always lacking in development. Otherwise, the headlamps suit the car-body and the car looks superb. I think that all who have worked on this design project have earned praise, a handshake and a perfect job, as they have done their job perfectly.

O izdelavi prtljanega prostora About designing the boot
Every element of the vehicle must perform its function as well as possible that goes also for the boot. The boot lid has to open, close and lock. Because of a relatively simple final design of opening the Student Roadsters lid, the integrated hinges and closing mechanism are taken from Peugeot 406 and with smaller adjustments they function very well. Due to the method of production of the exterior of the vehicle and a wide range of used materials, the making and fastening of interior linings was a very exacting task. It is well known that the difference between the theory and the practice is immense, but only by participation in such an extensive project as Student Roadster, we get the answer to the ever present question why. The revelation that little things are those which give a mark to the day is inevitable. The craziest and most simple ideas are those that count and in the end everything depends on the most important attribute of the best engineers the team work.

Sprednji arometi so eden od najzanimivejih delov avtomobila. Konstruiral jih je Donald Abri Pleterski v sodelovanju z naim partnerjem podjetjem Hella Lux Slovenija, d. o. o., kjer so jih tudi izdelali. V sprednji aromet so integrirani dolgi in kratki pramen, pozicijska lu ter smerokaz. Headlamps are one of the most attractive parts of the vehicle. They were designed by Donald Abri Pleterski in cooperation with our partner Hella Lux Slovenija d.o.o., where they were also made. High and low beams, position lamp and indicator are integrated in the headlamp.

Vsak element vozila mora opravljati svojo funkcijo, po monosti im bolje tako je tudi s prtljanikom. Pokrov prtljanega prostora se mora odpirati, zapirati in zakleniti. Zaradi razmeroma enostavne konne izvedbe odpiranja pokrova Student Roadsterja so vanj vgrajeni teaji in zapiralni mehanizem prtljanika peugeota 406, ki z manjimi predelavami tudi tu dobro opravljajo svoje delo. Zaradi naina izdelave zunanjosti vozila in irokega nabora uporabljenih materialov je bila, zanimivo, zahtevna naloga izdelava in pritrditev notranjih oblog iz tkanine. Splono je znano, da znajo biti razhajanja med teorijo in prakso velika, ele s sodelovanjem pri tako obsenem projektu, kot je Student Roadster, pa pride odgovor na tisti veni zakaj. Ugotovitev, da so malenkosti tiste, ki dajo dnevu predznak, je neizbena. Najbolj nore in najbolj preproste zamisli so tiste, ki tejejo, na koncu pa je vse odvisno od najpomembneje odlike najboljih inenirjev timskega dela.

Pri konstruiranju avtomobila so bile s strokovnjaki podjetja CIMOS, d. d., opredeljene stroge zahteve za vgradnjo vitalnih komponent, kot so pedalni sklop, rona zavora, teaj pokrova motorja in teaji vrat. Prikljuna mesta teh sklopov so zasnovana tako, da omogoajo vgradnjo prototipnih kosov novih komponent, razvitih v sodelovanju Cimosa in CRV-ja. Kot je prikazano na sliki, se novi sklopi najprej vgradijo v raunalniki 3D-model, nato pa usklajeni kosi v pravi prototip.

In the process of designing the vehicle, strict demands regarding the integration of vital components, such as pedal assembly, hand break, hinge of bonnet and hinges of the doors were defined with the experts from CIMOS d.d. Connection positions for these assemblies are designed in a way that enables the integration of prototype parts of new components developed in cooperation between CIMOS and CRV. As shown in the picture, the new assemblies are first integrated in the computer 3D model and the aligned parts are then transformed to real prototypes.

Konstrukcija in izdelava vrat
Vrata niso videti kompleksen sistem, vendar pa so v njih osnovna nosilna konstrukcija vrat, zapiralno-odpiralni mehanizem in mehanizem za pomik stekla. Sooala sva se z razlinimi problemi, najveji pa sta bila prostorska stiska in mehanizem za pomik stekla oziroma steklo samo. Najti je bilo namre treba steklo, ki bi po obliki ustrezalo loku sprednjega stebrika in celotnemu dizajnu ter ne bilo preveliko za naa vrata. Veliko asa nama je vzelo tudi pozicioniranje teajev vrat, saj je bilo treba zagotoviti ustrezno odpiranje vrat, pri emer se vrata ne smejo zajedati v bok vozila. Meniva, da sva projekt opravila zelo uspeno, vendar se zavedava, da je vsako stvar mogoe narediti e bolje. Projektov, kot je Student Roadster, na Fakulteti za strojnitvo primanjkuje, saj smo tudentje s tem projektom spoznali, kaj pomeni prenesti teoretina znanja in modele v prakso, kar pa je kljuno znanje vsakega dobrega inenirja.

The door does not seem as a complex system, but it includes the basic support structure of the door, the opening-closing mechanism and the window moving mechanism. We have faced different problems, the biggest being the lack of space and the window moving mechanism, and the window itself. We had to find a window that would fit the curve of the front column as well as correspond to the entire design, and would not be too big for the door. Positioning the door hinges took us quite some time. We had to ensure that the door would open properly and would not collide with the side of the vehicle. We believe we have finished this project successfully, but at the same time we are aware that everything can be done even better. There is not enough projects like Student Roadster at the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering. This project helped students realise how to turn theoretical knowledge and models into practice, which is a key competence of any good engineer.

He was in charge of safety, dealing with it in numerous seminars and defending it successfully in his thesis titled Reconstruction and optimisation of energy accumulation zones in frontal collision of Peugeot 406. After graduation he entered the post-graduate studies and worked for the LAVEK laboratory at the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering in Ljubljana. Apart from safety, he was also in charge of coordination of teamwork, and was employed in Litostroj E. I. He passed away prematurely due to a fatal disease.

Pri projektu je bil zadolen za varnost, kar je obravnaval v razlinih seminarjih in uspeno zagovarjal v diplomski nalogi z naslovom Rekonstrukcija in optimizacija con za akumulacijo energije ob elnem trku vozila Peugeot 406. Po diplomi se je vpisal na podiplomski tudij in bil nekaj asa zaposlen v laboratoriju LAVEK na Fakulteti za strojnitvo v Ljubljani. Poleg varnosti je skrbel tudi za koordinacijo dela skupine, zaposlen pa je bil v Litostroju E. I. Prezgodaj nas je zapustil zaradi hude bolezni.

Podroje njegovega dela so vibracije in njihov vpliv na loveka. V razlinih seminarjih in samostojnih nalogah se je posvetil modalni analizi ene od razvojnih verzij asije in izvedel konstrukcijo vrat avtomobila. Po konani diplomi se je vpisal na podiplomski tudij in se kot mladi raziskovalec iz gospodarstva zaposlil v podjetju CIMOS, d. d., trenutno pa je na izobraevanju v laboratoriju LADISK na Fakulteti za strojnitvo v Ljubljani. Skrbi tudi za administracijo drutva Student Roadster.

His field of work involves vibrations and their influence on people. In seminars and independent assignments he dealt with the modal analysis of one of the developmental versions of the chassis and carried out the design of the cars doors. After the graduation he entered postgraduate studies and was employed at CIMOS, d. d. as a junior researcher; at the moment he attends the education at the LADISK laboratory on the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering of Ljubljana. He is also in charge of administration of the Student Roadster association.

V seminarjih in samostojnih nalogah se je posvetil razlinim podrojem dela. Delno se je osredotoil na homologacijske zahteve vozila, najvejo pozornost pa je namenil analizi obes in prenosnosti cestnih obremenitev na nosilno konstrukcijo avtomobila. Po obravnavi slednje je izvedel harmonino analizo nosilne konstrukcije. Po diplomi se je vpisal na podiplomski tudij na Fakulteti za strojnitvo v Ljubljani in se kot mladi raziskovalec zaposlil v laboratoriju LANEM. Kolikor mu as dopua, e vedno aktivno sodeluje pri projektu.

He dealt with different fields of work in his seminars and independent assignments . He partly focused on the type-approval requirements of the vehicle, giving most of his attention to the analysis of suspension and the transferability of road stresses onto the supporting construction of the vehicle. After discussing the latter, he carried out a harmonic analysis of the supporting construction. After graduation he entered postgraduate studies at the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering in Ljubljana and was employed at LANEM laboratory as a junior researcher. Time permitting, he is still actively involved in the project.

More than 60 years of experience


On the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering in Ljubljana the pedagogical, research and professional work in the sphere of mechanical engineering is present more than 60 years. We want to become the most important educational and research faculty with highest international educational standards in the sphere of mechanical engineering in Slovenia, Central and South-eastern Europe, because of which we with our graduates and research work will be attractive not only to Slovenian, but also to the international economy and developmentally research institutions.

Pedagogical activity
The Faculty of Mechanical Engineering is carrying out university study for gaining high professional education in the sphere of mechanical engineering and postgraduate program for gaining the title of Specialist, Master of Science and Doctor of science. Pedagogical and research activities are being performed in these spheres: - Power and process engineering, - Design, mechanics and maintenance of machines, - Mechatronics, micromechanical systems and automatization, - Production engineering - Aviation. In next academic year 2008/2009 we will begin to perform also Bologna Study program, namely university education of rst degree MECHANICAL ENGINEERING, developmentally research program.

Research activity
The Faculty of Mechanical Engineering is intensively cooperating with Slovenian industry in several projects and in research sphere is successfully incorporating itself into international developmentally research projects by participating in bunches, centers of excellence and technological sets. Pedagogical and research work on the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering are being performed in 18 pedagogical research units in 34 laboratories that are supported by several organization units.
