Quarter grades will be based on the following: o Tests and labs/activities/projects o Quizzes/homework o Participation/notebook 50% 40% 10%

Tests There will be a test at the end of each unit. Tests will be announced at least 5 days prior to the test date.

Projects/labs You will do a variety of labs, projects and other group activities throughout the school year.

Quizzes/homework There will be announced, as well as unannounced, quizzes. You will be allowed to use your notes and/or handouts for unannounced quizzes. Science homework will be assigned a few nights weekly and occasionally on the weekends. All homework should be neatly done. I require you to put your first name and initial of last name, grade level (with section color), and date at the top of each assignment. If you are absent, you are responsible for checking the homework page to see what you missed. Missed work should be completed promptly and arrangements made for taking any missed quizzes or tests should be discussed with me upon your return. I collect homework at the start of class. Homework is considered late if turned in any time after Ive collected it and will have 10% of its value deducted for each day that it is late.
** Please make sure that you ask me for help if you are having difficulty with a given assignment. I want you to understand the material and to do well. I encourage you to come see me during study hall or in the morning, before school starts, if you need me to explain something further.

STEM Day Project 5th graders will be participating in Congressionals celebration of STEM in the spring. They will work in small groups to design and carry out an experiment. They will then write up their experimental procedure, results and conclusion and present it on a tri-fold poster board on STEM Day.

Participation/notebook Each student is required to keep class notes. These will include each question of the day and notes from class discussions. These notes must be kept in the science section of your binder or in your science folder and will be a part of your participation grade.

I am excited to be working with you and am looking forward to a very good year.
