How to carry out a pasteurizer survey? Steps for a pasteurizer plant survey. 1. Collect the following data: a.

Water characteristics (make up water and the water quality of each zone in the pasteurizer). At the minimum analyze the samples for: i. pH (will impact corrosion on aluminium cans) ii. Alkalinity iii. Chloride (can have impact on stainless steel corrosion) iv. Hardness v. Halogen vi. Treatment chemicals (Zn, PO4,) b. Machine characteristics i. OEM ii. Dosing points iii. Dosing and monitoring equipment iv. Volume of each zone v. How are the zones connected to each other. vi. Metallurgy of the machine vii. Material of construction of the conveyor system viii. Type of heating (direct steam injection, heat exchangers) ix. Make a visual inspection of the pasteurizer and record any indications of corrosion or fouling. c. Packaging characteristics i. Kind of packaging (cans, bottles) ii. Packaging supplier iii. Material of the packaging (glass, steel, aluminium) d. Operating characteristics i. Operating hours a day ii. Temperature profile over the machine (measure or record the temperature in each zone) iii. Boil out procedure and frequency iv. Cleaning of pump screens (frequency) v. Frequent changes in packaging or beverage processed (will impact the amount of water used) vi. Steam consumption per hour. vii. What is the bottleneck in the packaging hall (filler, pasteurizer, ). Why?

e. Financial data Page 1 of 2

How to carry out a pasteurizer survey? i. Cost of water (including pre treatment, and discharge costs) ii. Cost of energy (cost per ton of steam) iii. Cost for boil outs iv. Cost for labor to clean the pump screens v. Actual treatment cost 2. Special Nalco tools a. Diagnostic Trasar to determine the water dynamics of the system. b. Tracide study to evaluate the performance of the biocide in use c. Enthalpy measurement of the water overflow (especially important for once through pasteurizers.
