Statement of directions- guidance for corporate thinking, behavior, and action- covers a broad area- an approach to its environment influenced by objectives, mgt structure, recourses, attitudes, social values, customs and practices industrial, economic, fiscal,& commercial policies of govt. agreement conditions with employees, policies of sister concerns, public opinion etc. covers all functional areas of production, marketing, finance can be grouped as major policies & minor policies
Purpose
A term associated with integrated mgt course- integrates knowledge in functional areas to develop a generalist approach in mgt- helps to view orgl. Problems in their totality- awareness about consequences of action in one area on the org. as a whole- helps in understanding business as a system consisting of a number of subsystems. Any action in one sub system has impact on the other and the system as a whole. Enable a system approach to decision making a generalist approach
E.g. decline in sales, a marketing problem- analysis leads to rising completion, inefficient distribution, high price, faulty sales promotion, inappropriate recruitment policies, poor training, falling quality standards, out dated design, underutilization of capacity- orgl. Problems- thus the purpose is three fold a. Integrates knowledge in various functional areas b. Adopt a generalist approach to problem solving c. To understand complex inter-linkages operating within an org. through systems approach to decision making and relating them to changes in the environment.
