Study Guide Chapter 22/23 There are 6 vocabulary matching and 25 multiple-choice questions.

There will be a Hardy-Weinberg problem to solve, as well as a couple of short response questions. Chapter 22 Know difference between catastrophism and uniformitarianism. Know how to read rock strata Know the 2 observations and 2 inferences of natural selection as observed/hypothesized by Darwin Be able to read a cladogram like the ones in figures 22.8, 22.20, & 22.17 Study figures 22.13 and 22.14 Know the difference between homologous, analogous, and vestigial structures Be able to explain convergent evolution

Chapter 23 Be sure you understand microevolution and that POPULATIONS evolve NOT individuals! Study the different types of variation: geographic, genetic variation: formation of new alleles, altering gene #, rapid reproduction, sexual reproduction KNOW THE H-W equation and how to solve it! Also know the conditions that must be present in a population in order to be in H-W equilibrium. Know WHY the H-W equation is useful and what can be assessed by it in real life. Make sure you understand genetic drift, founder effect, bottlenecking, and their effects on populations of different sizes. Make sure you understand what fitness is. Be able to identify and describe the types of selection in figure 23. 13. Know the different types of sexual selection Be able to explain heterozygote advantage and frequencydependent selection
