Poison in Disguise in INDIA

Apparently 97% of ALL cinnamon in India is Cassia [India produces 80 to 100 tonnes of the real cinnamon, against an annual demand of 12,000 tonnes!]. India Imports 10,000 tonnes of Cassia and 200 tonnes of Cinnamon annually. The true Cinnamon comes from Sri Lanka where as Cassia is from China, Indonesia and Vietnam. So to get real cinnamon you need to buy it directly from Kannur and Malapuram or get the variety known as Ceylon Cinnamon. The real cultivation of cinnamon in Kerala has come down from 480 ha to 280 ha in Kannur and from 80 ha to 4 ha in Malapuram. If the cinnamon powder is reddish brown, it is Cassia and if it is tan in colour it is cinnamon. Import cost of Cassia is Rs35/kg [sold at 150] and Cinnamon is Rs. 200 [sold at 600]. Most of Europe has banned Cassia in food and US, Germany and UK imports it only for producing rat poison! The chemical coumarin in Cassia affects kidney and liver. Body can tolerate up to 0.1 mg of coumarin/kg of body weight. Cassia contains 2.1 g to 4.4 g of coumarin/kg. The position of Spice Board is that people need not worry since the amount consumed by Indians is very low! But what about those who consumes 2 tea spoons a day as a diabetic remedy?
