Year: Date: Year 5 Monday 20th May 2013 Curriculum Area: Time Period: World Studies Period 3 (60 Minutes)

Specific Lesson Learning Goals Students will be able to: Define the terms, Gold Rush, Digging, Digger Analyse ancient mining methods and tools Compare ancient and modern mining techniques

Students Prior Knowledge: Students are aware of gold mining in Australia and are aware of the term Gold Rush. Students have previously used ICT to research terms and ideas. Preparation: PowerPoint presentation on mining Ensure student access to computers White board and white board markers Lesson Progression 5 Minutes 20 Minutes 50 Minutes 60 Minutes Gather the students at their desks and ask for quiet and attention Let the students know that we are going to be looking at gold mining Ask the students what they know about gold mining techniques and how gold is mined Start a discussion about mining tools ancient and modern Show the students the PowerPoint presentation Continue discussion based on the different slides Ask the students to get into pairs and work together on a computer to find the definitions of the terms on the board Ask the students if they have any questions about the task Have the students start the task Walk around the classroom listening to the students, giving advise and making corrections where necessary Ask the students to place their World Studies books on my desk for marking Ask the students to recap the lesson and reflect on what they have learnt Ask the students to pack away their things and put their novel away Congratulate the students on a great lesson and dismiss them for lunch
