UNIVERSIDAD CATOLICA DE COSTA RICA METHODS II SCHEDULE: Wednesdays 6:00 8:30 p.m. Prof. Giovanna Regidor Valern III Term 2013 DESCRIPTION OF THE EVALUATION COMPONENTS 1. READING MATERIALS (20%) For each assigned reading material for each class, students will have to show they have read and understood the material. This can be done by writing and answering discussion questions, creating a word map or having a quiz. This assignment must be turned in the day the material will be discussed in class. If the student is absent for a justified reason, it must be sent the same day of class by email. No late assignments will be accepted. 2. LITERATURE REVIEW (15%) Students will write a literature review from any issue related to any of the topics discussed in class and related to English teaching (the Communicative Approach, motivation, error correction, classroom management, group work, teaching any of the skills, etc.) On the assigned dates, students have to bring an article related to that issue together with the summary of the article, for a total of 5 articles. Guidelines will be given on the format and content of this assignment. Students must present a written work and an oral work of their topic. 3. Lesson Demonstration (10%) Students will design and present a lesson to their peers including all the components studied in the course. This should be no longer than 20-30 minutes and will be done in groups. Guidelines will be given previous to its presentation. 4. Textbook Evaluation (10%) When asked, students must bring a commercial textbook to class used for teaching English to children. In class, they will do the analysis of the book and the next week they will present a report with the complete analysis. If the student is not present in class that day, he/she will lose the part of the grade for the in-class work. 5. Skills Presentation (10%) Students must create from real-life material (not taken from a textbook) a demonstration of how to teach that skill. For example, students can choose an article from a magazine and must present a lesson plan with that article. They will present this to their classmates who will act as students. Students will be assigned which skill they have to present (listening, speaking, reading, writing). At the end, the student must turn in the lesson plan. 6. Classroom Management Technique (10%) Students must choose and explain a classroom management technique to their classmates. This should not take longer than 10 minutes. 7. Movie Report (10%) After watching a movie in class, students must turn in a report on the movie, based on a discussion guide that will be provided by the professor. If the student does not come to class that day he/she will lose the grade of this assignment. 8. Discussions (10%) Students will participate in a blog about the course by sharing their experiences and ideas. Each student is expected to participate 3 times in the blog, divided as follows: one participation to answer the question posted by the professor and two participations commenting or answering their classmates questions in their blog. A rubric will be used to check the students participation. Please keep in mind that each blog has a specific duration of time. The address to log on to the blog is methods2.weebly.com 9. Classroom Participation: Students are expected to actively participate in class either contributing information or participating as students.
