CONSIDERATION ON POPULATION IN THE RESAVA REGION

The authors consider the populatiion and ethnical relations in the Resava
region one of the nuimerous geographical areais of E ast Serbia, which extends
along th e river of the sam e iname.
The region h as a imixed /population: the Serbiian population speaking the
Kosovs,koResavski idialect; and th e W allachians w ith tw o languages, speaking
S erb ian and provincial R um anian. There aire 66,177 liinhabitants in this area. Of
these, according to the a u th o rs evolution, about 10,000 (12%) are Wallachians.
On these basic d ata ithe authors have trie d ito answ er ithe following questions:
Was th e R esava ragion continuouslv populated tthrough history and to w hat
ethnicai group idid its in h ab itan ts belong? W here d id rtodays inhabitaints come
from an d w hat period? W hat w ere (the ethnical an d cu ltural relations between
the Serbs and the W allachians?
On the basis lof igeneral ethnological knowledge concerning ithe population
and culture of Serbia lin thc Miidd'le Ages, -the aiuthors podnt ouit th a t Resaiva was
populated by Slav peopleb, i. e. by Serbians. B ut lin <view o f th e cvrdence, afforded
b> certain d ata, they (state th a t ithe ancient Rom anized fpopulation m u st haive
played some p a rt in jthe ethnical icomposiition of ithis population.
An exact reply iregardiiiig ithe ethnical istruoture of the population in the Resava region during the Turkiish idomimantion i(from the XVth to th e m iddle of
the X V IIIth century) cannot be given. Following the Turkish linvasion, the Serb ian population re tre a te d to ithe n o rth , and |the new (population cam e from the
south. The W allachian com ponent ds visible liin this period.
The period from th e |miid-XVIIIth to the rniid-XIXth century w itnessed the
m ost lintensive colanization of the iregion o f Resava by Scrbians and Wallachians.
The limmigrants, however, found th e re a certain n um ber of anoient .inhabitants.
On the basis of thi:s fact ithe authors conclude it'hat the Resava iregion was oontanuously populated. The Serbs omiginated from Kosovo, Pom oravlje and Timoka
, and the W allachians fram Erdelj and Homolje.
W ith reg ard to th e ethnogenesis o f ithiis iregion, th e authors thiink th a t this
problem lis not so simple, and th a t th e isolution ishould be sought in specific ethnical processes on the BaLkan Peninsula. Easit S erbia lis geographically and culturally ibound to th e iK arpathian region. One of the basic characteristics of this
a rea lis th a t th e genesis of th is populatilon iis very lold, oriiginating from the early
T racianSlavic sym biosis.
. .
At the end of the article the auth o rs p resen t d a ta on contam porenous ethm cal
relations, and (point o u t ithat istudies of folk-oulture and of th e origine of the
population of E ast Serbia provide the answ er ito Ithe question of the linfluence of one ethnical group on ithe jother, and |to o th e r resem blences. Such m utual
influenccs may explain sim ilar processes w hich took place lin th e B alkan Penm sula
in the past
