10. SINUSOIDAL OSCILLATORS

Aim: Apparatus: Theory: To design & implement RC Phase Shift & Wien Bridge Oscillator for given frequency. IC-741, DC Power Supply, Bread board, Resistors, Capacitor, CRO, Function Generator A) Phase Shift Oscillator: Here the oscillator consists of an op-amp as the amplifying stage and three RC cascaded networks as the feedback circuit. The op-amp is used in the inverting mode so any signal appears at the inverting terminal is shifted by 180 at the output. An additional phase shift required for oscillation is provided by the cascaded networks. Thus the total phase shift around the loop is 360 or 0. At some specific frequency when the phase shift of the cascaded RC networks is exactly 180 and the gain of the amplifier is sufficiently large, the circuit will oscillate at that frequency. This frequency is called the frequency of oscillation F0 and given by,

Fo =

1 And RF = 29 R1 2 6RC

B) Wien Bridge Oscillator: Here the Wien bridge circuit is connected between the amplifier input terminal and output terminal. The bridge has a series RC network in one arm and a parallel RC network in the adjoining arm. In the remaining two arm of the bridge R1 and RF are connected. The phase angle condition for oscillation is that the total phase shift around the circuit must be 0. This condition occurs when the bridge is balanced, that is, at resonance. The frequency of oscillation F0 is given by

Fo =
Design:

Phase Shift Oscillator: For _________ KHz frequency

Wien Bridge Oscillator: For _________ KHz frequency

Procedure:

1. Connect circuit as shown in fig. First apply +15V & -15V to op - amp. 2. Observe o/p waveforms on CRO & adjust RF of the amplifier till sinusoidal waveform is obtained. 3. Take peak to peak voltage & frequency of the waveform. 4. Draw the waveform that has been observed on CRO.

Observation: Phase Shift Oscillator: Vo(p-p) =

Wien Bridge Oscillator: Vo(p-p) =
