Student Attendance Smart System (SASS) : Hardware Development

Developed by: Khairul Azhar Bin Abdul Liza Supervised by: Assoc. Prof. Dr. Al-Khalid Haji Othman Electronic Department, Faculty of Engineering Universiti Malaysia Sarawak Introduction
Student Attendance Smart System (SASS) is a system that takes attendance by using information extracted from transponder through RFID card reader. This project used RFID tag/card (passive RFID) as a student card and an RFID reader to read the card. The system has also enhanced with the use Arduino microcontroller as the main controller and XBee Wireless Module to provide wireless communication.

Results
The results show the analysis of the Received Signal Strength Indicator (RSSI) measurement and implementation of SASS (Hardware) and SASS (Software).

Project Objectives
I. To study and investigate the RFID, ZigBee and XBee technology and system for student attendance monitoring application II. To design hardware for Student Attendance Smart System (SASS) III.To develop a Student Attendance Smart System (SASS) that can be implemented in the Faculty of Engineering class, tutorial room and laboratory by combining hardware and proposed software

The result shows the casing design does not inhibit the signal transmit and the system is reliable and readable under 100 meters distance.

Methodology
The proposed system consists of project planning, hardware development and hardware architecture. All these modules are integrated to allow full functionality. The hardware design is done on top-down strategy which is mainly done to achieve the objectives.

Conclusion
The designed hardware has proven successful in doing the task to read RFID cards and perform wireless communication. The system is able to overcome the problems of traditional method which is via paper and pen, reduce the probability of losing the attendance sheet and ethical issues when counterfeiting signature occurred.
