Chapter 2 Information Sheet

Important Vocabulary: matter, physical property, chemical property,

element, atom, chemical bond, molecule, compound, chemical formula, solution, physical change, chemical change, law of conservation of matter, energy, thermal energy, endothermic change, exothermic change, chemical energy

Important Concepts:
1. Matter has mass and takes up space. You can describe physical and chemical properties of matter. Chemical properties are observed when the matter is turned into another substance. Physical properties are observed without changing the matters composition. (p59-61) 2. Elements are the simplest substances and cannot be broken down into other substances by chemical or physical means. Atoms are the basic particle of elements. (p62-63) 3. Chemical bonds can combine atoms to form molecules and compounds. You can write a description of a compound using a chemical formula. Compounds can have properties that are different from the atoms they are made of. (p63-64) 4. Unlike compounds, mixtures are not chemically combined and the substances are not in a set ratio. In a heterogeneous mixture you can see the individual parts. In a homogenous mixture you cannot. (p65-66) 5. Physical changes do not alter the makeup of the substance. Physical changes include changes in state, shape, or form. Chemical changes produce a new substance with new properties. During a chemical change matter is not lost it is just rearranged. This is the law of conservation of matter. (p69-71) 6. Energy allows for work to occur and change to happen. Energy can be thermal, chemical, electromagnetic, or electrical. Energy can be transformed from one type to another. (p74-77) Practice Due Test Due:
