Is capital punishment effective in deterring criminals from committing heinous crimes like murder, rape and terrorism? At present, there are 21 countries that still have capital punishment. Some of the countries that have capital punishment are Singapore, Malaysia, United Arab Emirates, Taiwan and the United States. In Singapore, Malaysia, United Arab Emirates and Taiwan, crime rate has reduced with the introduction of capital punishment. On the other hand, crime rate in the United States has not reduced with the introduction of capital punishment. The reason why capital punishment is not effective in the United States is because of the nature of crimes in the country. Every year, the United States witnesses a number of murders and massacres, in which the criminal shoots himself. So, there is no way of punishing the criminal. The debate on capital punishment has been ongoing for decades. There are many people who believe that capital punishment is not a solution for heinous crimes because it contradicts the statement that killing people is wrong. Since we are teaching people not to kill human beings, how can legal authorities kill the criminal? Others believe that a criminal should suffer and be taught a lesson for the sins he/she has committed. By giving capital punishment, the criminal does not learn a lesson. He is simply put to death, with a tinge of pain. People who support capital punishment claim that criminals who take away the lives of victims have no right to live. These people feel that capital punishment is indicative of a civilized society, where barbaric acts are not tolerated. Capital punishment is one of the many ways of punishing a criminal. However, it may not be a solution even for heinous crimes because a criminal is not given a chance to repent. A criminal should be given rehabilitation so that he can learn from his mistakes. We should reform our society, instead of executing criminals. Having progressed so far from the Stone Age, we should refrain from jumping onto the capital punishment bandwagon.
