JAMBUKAR TRAINING CENTER

LME 2005 Batch

Subject: Refrigeration Test
Date: 18/09/2005 Time: 10.00 am to 12.30 pm
Instructions:
a) Please read all the questions carefully and solve all of them.
b) Write answers and solutions in systematic manner along with assumptions
made by you.
c) Use refrigeration charts and scientific calculator.

1. Air refrigeration (15 Marks)

Cold storage plant is required to store 20 tonnes of fish. The fish is supplied at a
temperature of 30°C. The specific heat of fish above freezing point is 2.93kJ/kg K.
The specific heat of fish below freezing point is 2.93kJ/kg K. The fish is stored in cold
storage which is maintained at -8°C. The freezing point of fish is -4°C. The latent heat
of fish is 235 kJ/kg. If the plant requires 75kW to drive it, find
i)Capacity of the plant ii) Time taken to achieve cooling Assume actual COP of the
plant as 0.3 of the Carnot COP

2. Vapour Compression Refrigeration (40 Marks)

An ice plant produces 25 tonnes of ice at -2°C per day from water of 30°C in a day.
Refrigerating machine for the ice plant works on simple vapour compression cycle
with Ammonia as a refrigerant. The cycle operates between 30°C and -10°C. Find i)
work to be supplied to the compressor ii) Mass flow of refrigerant required iii) Size of
the compressor required when volumetric efficiency is 85%, L/D ratio is 1.2 and 4
cylinder system running at 1000 rpm iv) COP of the cycle v) What would be the
monthly operating cost of ice plant refrigerator if electricity rate is Rs. 4 per unit and
water charges Rs. 200 per lakh litre.

Please suggest refrigerant if same plant is to be modified with another refrigerant

instead of ammonia based on following parameters,
a) COP
b) Mass flow of the refrigerant
c) Size of compressor required keeping same rpm, volumetric efficiency and LD ratio.
d) Monthly cost of operating the plant
e) Any other problem faced in operation.
(Hint: Use refrigerant R12, R22, R134a)

3. Vapour Absorption Refrigeration (15 Marks)

Describe Aqua Ammonia vapour absorption system with following points of

discussion,
a. Principle of Vapour Absorption System
b. Working of the system with all details of temperature and pressure etc.
c. Difference in working of the system compared with vapour
compression system.
d. Application of vapour absorption system
e. Advantages of the system
f. Drawbacks of the system
