MULTIPLE ORGAN DYSFUNCTION SYNDROME (MODS)

MODS is progressive impairment of two or more organ system. This is the result of an uncontrolled inflammatory response to severe injury or illness. It is the another phase in the

CaUSES:
Dead or injured tissue Infection Perfusion deficits For acutely ill patients advanced age , malnutrition and coexisting diseases increase the risk of MODS.

PATHOPHYSIOLOGY OF MULTIPLE ORGAN DYSFUNCTION SYNDROME

Injury Sepsis disease

Endothelial Damage Neuroendocrine response Release of inflammatory mediators

Activation of complement, coagulation, and kallikrein/kinin systems

Vasodilation Capillary Permeability Selective vasoconstriction Microvascular thrombi

Massive, systemic immune/inflammator y response

hypermetabolism

Maldistribution of sytemic and organ blood flow

Tisssue hypoperfusion

Oxygen supply/demand imbalance Supply-dependent oxygen consumption Tissue hypoxia

Oxygen and substrate demand

Cardiac function

Exhaustion of fuel supply

Myocardial depression

Acidosis Impaired cellular function
