812002025 ANALYSIS OF CHLORINE IN BLEACH

09.09.2013

DEMONSTRATOR: Pooja

AIM: To determine the % of available chlorine in a bleach sample by using the weight % NaOCl.

INTRODUCTION: The bleaching properties of bleach are due to the presence of chlorine. Chlorine in bleach exists as NaOCl, sodium hypochlorite which is an oxidizing agent. Sodium hypochlorite oxidizes iodide to iodine. NaOCl (aq) + 2KI (s) ----------> I2 (aq) + 2KO (aq) + NaCl (aq) Iodine reacts with the excess I- provided by the KI added and produced soluble I3-. I2 + I- I3The I3- concentration correlates to the initial concentration of sodium hypochlorite. By adding sodium thiosulphate the I3- reacts and is reconverted back to I-. The end point is determined by the absence of I3- and presence of I-. The I3- reacts with starch the give a blue black complex, when all of the I3- is reacted with the thiosulphate, and only I- remains, the blue black colour disappears, leaving the solution colourless.
