Words Their Way Chapters 1 & 2 Quotes/Concepts from Text Orthography definition P.1 Even more words are acquired when students explicitly examine word spellings to discover relationships among words and how these relationships represent sounds and meanings P. 1 Read & Chomsky are further explained through Hendersons studies and research P. 2-3 By using students spellings as a guide, teachers can efficiently differentiate effective instruction in phonics, spelling and vocabulary. P. 3 Students need hands-on opportunities to manipulate word features P. 3 The best way to develop fast and accurate perception of word features is to engage in meaningful reading and writing P. 3 Word study is well worth 10-15 minutes of instruction and practice daily. P. 3 Basic word study development P. 4-7 Your reactions/thoughts/questions The correct sequences of letters in words. This is a very complex process but a big ahh hah moment when little ones get the concept of why certain symbols mean different things.

Kids invented words are not just jibber jabber. Their concept changes over time but they confuse sound elements with pattern and meaning. Completely normal. But how can we assess spelling without spelling tests?

Just like with math, spelling and grammar need to be handson, even for those who are not kinesthetic learners! Key word: meaningful

Some schools would argue more. 1.) Alphabet represents relationship between letters and sounds. 2.) Pattern inconsistent, but finding groups of letters to recognize. 3.) Meaning groups of letters represent direct meaning. This is now less confusing for readers. 1.) What students do correctly. 2.) What students use, but confuse. 3.) What is absent in students spelling. Yet! In the process of learning to read.

Orthographic knowledge is defined by three functional levels. P. 9 Emergent spelling encompasses the writing efforts of children who are not yet reading conventionally P. 10 The derivational relationships spelling stage is the final stage in the development model. This stage continues throughout adulthood, when individuals continue to read and write accordingly to their interests and specialties. P. 14

Yes, still working on this, myself!

Instruction must be sensitive to 2 fundamental tenets: 1.) Students learning of phonics, spelling, and vocabulary is based on their developmental or instructional level. 2.) Students learning is based on the way they are naturally inclined to learn: through comparing and contrasting word features and discovering consistencies. P. 21 Doing spelling inventories can let you, as a teacher how far along phonetically your students are. This can be done through a spelling test that is not graded and everyone can get an A just for turning it in. P. 32

This will provide qualitative information for your students reading and writing levels1
