Learning Goal

Accurately record and organize data collected during an investigation.

Success Criteria

Identify the independent and dependent variables in the key question for an investigation. Draw data tables and graphs for scientific questions.

1: Look at the scientific question and hypothesis How does the height from which a ball is dropped affect how high the ball will bounce back? IF I drop a ball from a height of 1 m, THEN the ball will bounce higher than when dropped from 0.5 m.

The independent variable is mentioned first (IF) and the dependent variable is mentioned second (THEN).

2: Look at the data table

The height the ball was dropped from 0.5 m 1m The height that the ball bounced

The independent variable in the first column. You write the information in this column before you start an experiment. You decide what these numbers will be. The dependent variable is in the second column. You will write numbers in this column that you measure during the experiment.

3: Look at the graph of the results The independent variable always goes on the bottom (x-axis) of the graph and the dependent variable always goes on the side (y-axis).

Crickets chirp less often when the temperature is cooler.

Independent (changed): Dependent (measured): Hypothesis: IF (independent)

temperature chirping frequency

the temperature is raised 5C

THEN (dependent)
The crickets will chirp 3 times more per minute.

The size of soap bubbles depends on the amount of soap in the water.
Independent (changed): amount of soap Dependent (measured): size of soap bubbles Hypothesis: IF (independent)

the amount of soap is increased by 5 ml

THEN (dependent)
the diameter of the soap bubbles will be 2cm bigger.

The size of soap bubbles depends on the amount of soap in the water.

For each of the questions below determine the independent and dependent variables, write a hypothesis, and draw a data table and graph. 1) How does changing the number of coils around the nail affect the number of paper clips an electromagnet will pick up? 2) Does the colour of bread affect how many birds will eat it? 3) We will investigate the effect of changing the temperature on how fast an enzyme is able to work.

Enzymes: Substances that speed up chemical reactions in animals, plants and the human body.

4) Does the amount of acid affect the speed at which hydrogen gas is produced when it is mixed with magnesium?

Exit Slip September 23rd 1) Does the independent variable follow the IF or the Then in a hypothesis? 2) Are the values for the dependent variable listed in the FIRST or SECOND column of a data table? 3) Is the independent variable recorded on the X or Y axis
