Classroom Procedures

Procedures are a part of life. We follow procedures for using our phones, boarding an airplane, approaching a traffic light, etc. The reason we have procedures in life is so that people know the acceptable and efficient ways to do things. Just like in everyday life, there are also procedures in this classroom.
BEFORE CLASS Before entering the classroom, make sure you check the mini dry erase board hanging by the door outside of the classroom. Special supplies needed for class will be posted here. It is your responsibility to check this dry erase board before entering the room. BEGINNING OF CLASS You are expected to enter the classroom quietly and calmly, and go straight to your assigned seat. You are to take out your assignment notebook, copy down the nights homework from the homework board, and complete the bell ringer. Do not wait for me to start class; get right to work when you sit down. After you have finished, wait or read silently. STUDENT NUMBERS At the beginning of the school year, you will be assigned a student number. This number will be used in these classes only. It will be used for things like handing in work, picking groups, picking jobs, and using laptops and computers. Remember your number and write it on all homework, papers, quizzes, and tests. WARM UPS At the start of each class, there is a warm up assignment on the board. You will enter the classroom and get started on the assignment quietly.

ATTENTION Whenever I need to get your attention, you will see me raise my hand up above my head like a high-five. Or you may hear me ring a bell because some of you may not be able to see my hand when working in a group. When you see my hand up or hear the bell, you are to: 1. Stop 2. Look 3. Listen ATTENDANCE A student is taught how to become the Attendance Recorder. This student keeps track of who is absent and who is tardy. A quick look around the room can establish who is absent. Then the Attendance Recorder informs the Absent Buddy of who is absent. ABSENT BUDDY The Absent Buddy is in charge of filling out an agenda/homework sheet and gathering all handouts and worksheets for absent students. CLASSROOM JOBS Classroom jobs will be selected at the beginning of each quarter. Your classroom job will be something that helps the classroom run smoothly. Example jobs include the Attendance Recorder or Absent Buddy. It is your goal to accomplish your job daily or as needed whether the teacher is present or not. Every student will have a class job at some point throughout the school year. Classroom jobs will be posted on a poster hanging in the room. TARDIES If you are tardy three times to class in a semester, you will receive a detention. For each tardy after that, you will receive another detention. You will be considered tardy if you are not in your seat when class begins. AGENDA/ HOMEWORK BOARD Every day, I will write the days objective, class agenda, and the nights homework on the front board. It is your responsibility to check this board to be aware of what we will be working on in class and what homework you will need to record in your assignment notebook. HANDING IN PAPERS When handing in papers, I will ask you to put them in order by number. At the back of the room, there are manila envelopes with the class numbers on them. When it is your turn to hand in an assignment, quietly push in your chair, go to your numbered folder on the back wall, and place your assignment inside. Please be respectful of the folder when placing your assignment inside to ensure it can be used all year. When finished, quietly return to your seat. Your name and class number needs to be written on all assignments.

WHILE YOU WERE OUT When you return from being absent, make sure you check the While You Were Out area in the back of the room. You will find different colored folders hanging on the wall here. Each folder has a class period written on it. Check your periods absent folder for any handouts or worksheets with your name on them. It is your responsibility to pick up this work and return it within the next two days. If you have any questions, please ask the absent buddy first. LATE/ABSENT WORK All late or absent work is to be placed in the colored bin labeled with your class period on the table near the door to the classroom. Make sure your name and class number is on your assignment, with LATE OR ABSENT written across the top. It is your responsibility to turn this work in. (Please do not hand anything to me or set anything on my desk, as it may get lost or misplaced.) Late work will be accepted up to 2 days late at 50% of the earned credit. POSTED GRADES Periodically, I will post current grades so that you are able to see your progress in class. Grades are posted by class period at the back of the room. There will be no student names on these lists. Instead, you will be given a four or five digit ID number to view your grade. Do not tell anyone your number! It cannot be changed. You may check your grade at the beginning or end of class. Do not get up during class to go check. RAISING YOUR HAND If you have a question or comment to share with the class, you are expected to raise your hand and wait to be called on. If you are working on an assignment and I cant see your hand right away, take a textbook and place it in an upright position and continue to work. I will come over to you as soon as I can. GETTING OUT OF YOUR SEAT Sometimes it is necessary to get out of your seat to get a tissue, to throw something away, or to sharpen your pencil. Please do not get out of your seat while I am talking or while a classmate is talking/presenting. Wait until the speaker has finished or the activity is over, and then get out of your seat. If you use a tissue, please wash your hands at the sink before returning to your seat. PUSHING IN CHAIRS Whenever you get out of your seat, no matter the reason, you must push in your chair. This is for everyones safety.

TEXTBOOKS You will receive a Literature and Language Arts Textbook. It is your responsibility to write your name in your assigned book and cover it with a book sock. Please let me know if there is any damage to your book when you receive it. I will give you your books at the beginning of the year. It is your responsibility to bring it to and from class as needed, and to return it at the end of the year in the same condition as you received it. You will be responsible for lost or damaged books. OOPS! CARD Every month you will receive an Oops! Card. Any time you forget something in your locker, forget something in another class, do not have an assignment completed on time, etc., your card will be initialed by a teacher. Every other week, 6 th grade will have a Reward Day. We will do things like watch movies, play games, organize lockers, and other enjoyable activities. If you get five (5) signatures in a two-week period, you will not be able to join in on the fun. You are to carry your card with you at all times. If you do not have your homework finished, please have your card out ready to be signed. If you need to go to your locker, please have your card out when you ask to go back to your locker. A safe place for your card is on the inside cover of your assignment notebook (tape it inside). WORKING IN LEARNING GROUPS There are times when we will work in groups. When working in a group: You are responsible for your own job and the results of the group. If you have a question, ask your support buddies. Do not ask a teacher right away. You must be willing to help if a support buddy asks you for help. If no one can answer a question, agree on a single question and assign one person to raise a hand for help from the teacher. SIGN OUT SHEET Any time that you leave the classroom alone, you MUST sign out and sign back in on the checkout sheet (after asking permission) located on the counter by the sink. Make sure you write the date, time, your name, and reason why you are leaving the room. It is very important that you fill this out. It helps me keep track of who is out of the room, and I am able to locate students in the event of a fire drill or tornado drill. Dont forget to take a pass with you too! They are hanging above counter by the sink.

BATHROOM USE Bathroom breaks should be taken during your four minute passing period. If it is an emergency, you may ask to leave the room. Please do not ask in the middle of a class discussion, activity, or test, as I will not allow you to go at that time. EXTRA HANDOUTS If you need another copy of a handout or worksheet, please ask me at the end of class. EXTRA SUPPLIES If you need to borrow supplies (pencils, colored pencils, markers, ruler, etc.), you may borrow from the white organizer at the back of the room. Please have your Oops! card out on your desk, and make sure you put whatever you borrowed back before you leave. SILENT READING We will silent read every Wednesday, and when we have extra time other days. This time allows us to get ahead for reading passports, take a little break in our busy schedule, and enjoy a good read! You may read a book, magazine, or newspaper as long as it is school appropriate and your parents approve of the content. You must have your reading material with you at the beginning of class. If you need something from the Media Center, do so before class. It is your responsibility to have silent reading material EVERY DAY. MEDIA CENTER Every other Tuesday, we will visit the media center to check out, renew, and return books. When we walk to and from the media center, we will walk in a single file line quietly because we do not want to disturb any other classes. Once in the media center, you are to either sit in your assigned seat for a lesson or quietly find a book. I will let you know the day of whether there will be a lesson or not. Media center time is not social time. If you need a book between visits, you may go before school, during lunch, or you can ask me for pass. END OF CLASS You are to remain at your seats with your chairs pushed in until I dismiss the class. The clock does not dismiss the class; the teacher dismisses the class. Students are dismissed when called upon, either individually or by groups. The class will not be dismissed if the classroom is not cleaned up.

COMPUTER LAB/LAPTOPS
5

When we use the computers in the lab, walk in a single file line quietly to and from the lab so that you do not disturb any other classes. Wait outside the lab until I get there. Sit at the computer that matches your number. When we use the laptops, make sure you are using the laptop that matches your assigned number. For both the lab and the laptops, log on and wait for instructions. NEVER open any other sites than the ones we are on and DO NOT change any settings on your computer. TORNADO/FIRE/LOCKDOWN DRILLS The procedures for each of these drills are posted by the door. Make sure you familiarize yourself with them. Briefly, for a fire drill, we will exit (as a class) through the doors to the left of the classroom. For a tornado drill, we will stand in the boys bathroom. And for a lockdown drill, we will walk single file through the door inside the classroom to Mrs. Godfreys room. Once inside the room, we will sit quietly with the door locked and lights on. If you happen to be outside the classroom for any of these drills, go to the nearest staff member and tell them you are from Ms. Klockowskis class.

Lets have a successful school year by following the classroom expectations and procedures!
