Big Bang

El crecimiento explosivo del estudio de Bjarke Ingels semeja un universo en expansin. Al frente de 190 personas cuando todava no ha cumplido los 40 aos, este dans carismtico tras formarse en la Royal Academy de Copenhague, la ETSA de Barcelona y la oficina de Rem Koolhaas en Rotterdam fund en 2001 PLOT con su colega de OMA Julien De Smedt, y emprendi en 2006 su camino independiente como BIG, creando un despacho que desde entonces ha crecido exponencialmente en sus sedes de Copenhague, Nueva York y Pekn. Lder de un equipo competente y motivado que combina la democracia escandinava con la cohesin tribal, Ingels practica con sus bigsters una arquitectura proactiva de impacto meditico, realista y onrica a la vez, en un entorno de inteligencia creativa y tenacidad propositiva que los asemeja ms a una startup tecnolgica que a un estudio convencional. Tuve la fortuna de presidir el jurado de la Bienal de Arquitectura de Venecia que en 2004 premi un proyecto de auditorio firmado por los jovencsimos socios de PLOT, y cuando en 2010 la Bienal decidi hacer balance de sus ediciones anteriores con un ciclo de conferencias, Bjarke Ingels y yo mismo fuimos invitados por el director de la 9 edicin, Kurt Forster, para representarla con sendas intervenciones en el Teatro alle Tesse del Arsenale, y la ocasin me permiti descubrir el desconcertante talento de un autor cuya actitud es an ms fascinante que sus obras. Ajeno a la retrica acadmica pese a haber transitado como profesor por Rice, Harvard, Columbia y Yale, Ingels rene la curiosidad inquisitiva con una franqueza que desarma y, como he podido comprobar cuando lo he visitado en Nueva York, un estilo de vida informal con una ambicin profesional descomunal. Ningn desafo arredra a este arquitecto que se mueve en bicicleta por la Gran Manzana mientras concibe obras colosales, que ya no disea con el lpiz o el ordenador sino con la gente, y que aspira a reconciliar lo funcional y lo fantstico con el talante positivo que expresa como un eslogan casi publicitario el ttulo de su monografa en forma de cmic de 2009, Yes is more. Bjarke Jensen Ingels que prefiri para su persona pblica el menos comn apellido materno desconfa de la cultura que se confunde con el entretenimiento, juzga la poltica y la economa como las dos nicas secciones adultas de los peridicos, y se ha propuesto construir con su estudio las utopas pragmticas de nuestra poca. Los grandes proyectos y las grandes ideas alimentan con la misma naturalidad la combustin alegre de un colectivo que irradia el universo de la arquitectura con la energa blanca de una estrella joven.

The explosive growth of Bjarke Ingels studio evokes an expanding universe. Heading a 190-strong team when he has not turned 40, this charismatic Dane after training at the Royal Academy of Copenhagen, the Barcelona School of Architecture and Rem Koolhaass office in Rotterdam set up PLOT in 2001 with his OMA colleague Julien De Smedt, and launched his solo career in 2006 under the name BIG, creating a firm which has grown exponentially from its headquarters in Copenhagen, New York and Beijing. Leader of a streamlined and motivated team that combines Scandinavian democracy with tribal cohesion, Ingels and his bigsters practice a proactive architecture with a media slant, both realistic and oneiric, in an environment of creative intelligence and tenacious invention that suggests a technological startup company rather than a conventional studio. I was fortunate to head the jury of the Venice Architecture Biennale that in 2004 gave an award to an auditorium project designed by the very young partners of PLOT, and when in 2010 the Biennale decided to take stock of its previous editions with a lecture series, Bjarke Ingels and myself were invited by the director of the 9th edition, Kurt Forster, to represent that edition speaking both at the Teatro alle Tesse of the Arsenale, and this occasion gave me the chance to discover the bewildering talent of an architect whose attitude and vision is perhaps even more fascinating than his works. Untainted by academic rhetoric although he has taught courses at Rice, Harvard, Columbia and Yale , Ingels combines inquisitive curiosity with a disarming frankness and, as I could confirm when visiting him in New York, a very casual lifestyle with a huge professional ambition. No challenge whatsoever can intimidate this architect who moves around Manhattan by bicycle while conceiving colossal works, designed not with a pencil or a computer but with people, and who hopes to reconcile the functional and the fantastic with the positive outlook that he expresses almost as a slogan through the title of his archicomic monograph Yes is more, published in 2009. Bjarke Jensen Ingels who preferred to take his mothers less common surname for his public persona shows a healthy distrust of culture sliding into entertainment, thinks that politics and economy are the only two adult sections in newspapers, and has set out to build with his studio the pragmatic utopias of our time. Both big projects and big ideas effortlessly fuel the happy combustion of a collective that radiates the universe of architecture with the white energy of a young star.
