ABSTRACT

In telecommunications, femtocell is a small cellular base station, typically designed for use in a home or small business enterprise.it connects to the service providers network via broadband. Current designs typically support 2 to 4 active mobile phones in a residential setting and 8 to 16 active mobile phones in enterprise settings. A femtocell allows service provider to extend service coverage indoors especially where access would be limited or otherwise unavailable.for a mobile operator, the attractions of a femtocell are improvements in both coverage and capacity, especially indoors. It also reduces call cost since it routes mobile phone traffic through IP network. A femtocell ,once plugged in,connects to the mobile network operator and provides extra coverage in the range of typically 30 to 50 meters for residential femtocells. The end user must declare which mobile devices should be allowed to connect to femtocell prior to installation. When these mobile phones arrive under coverage of their femtocell, they switch over from macrocell to femtocell automatically. Most operators provide a means for the end user to know when this happens. All communications will then automatically go through the femtocell.Similarly ,when the user leaves the area of coverage of femtocell the call is handed over to macro network.
