Task A: - Task A is a Low Cognitive task because it is asking the student to simply write a word problem for the

subtraction problem listed. The students will simply be reproducing learned facts that deal with subtraction. Task B: - Even though task B is dealing with subtraction like task A is, it is asking the students to do more complex thinking. The students must explain how you solve each problem, meaning they must have a full understanding of how to do the problem and why it works. This is a High Cognitive Demand task. Task C: - In task C, the students must understand place value and to be able to figure out what methods are being used in the example problems, they must find how each problem was done and then be able to compare the two problems to answer questions. The second question is asking the student to explain why something is done which means that they must understand why it works. This is a High Cognitive Demand question. Task D: - The students must solve the problem two different ways, which means that they must understand two different methods of how to get the answer. This is a High Cognitive Demand question.

Task E: - This is a Low Cognitive Demand task because the problem is done by memorization of how to solve a fraction problem. Task F: - This is a Low Cognitive Demand task because the problem is done by memorization of how to solve a fraction problem. Task G: - This is a Low Cognitive Demand question because the student will set up this question in a way that they have learned and used many times. They wont have to think about it, it is just using a memorized procedure. Task H: - This is a High Cognitive Demand task because it requires some degree of cognitive effort. The question will end up being a simple math problem but they will have to break down the word problem to get there. Task I: - This is a High Cognitive Demand question because there are multiple components to the question, they arent given a strategy to use, and they have to explain what they did and why it would work. They will also have to give a way that they could explain how this could work to a first grader in simple terms.

Task J: - This is a High Cognitive Demand question because the student will have to explain how this problem could be done using addition or subtraction. This requires them to have knowledge of how the procedures work and how he/she could come to the conclusion using either method. Task K: - This is a Low Cognitive Demand question because it is a procedure that would be done the same way every time. It is a memorized procedure. Task L: - This is a High Cognitive Demand question because the student must look at all the different examples and figure out how each student did the problem and if it worked for them or not. They then have to explain which way they would solve the problem.
