European Exploration Webquest for Facebook Project Student Page

Introduction Every day, we have technology at our fingertips. Computers, iPads, and cell phones are just a few of the ways that we can quickly communicate with one another. During the Age of Exploration, Conquistadors kept written logs of their expeditions, documenting everything from their routes, to the food and animals aboard their ships. They also wrote letters to send back to their King and family, detailing all of the wondrous sights and riches that they discovered. Imagine that instead of keeping a log or writing letters, the explorers had access to the same technology that you do! What if they had kept a Facebook page instead of a log? What would it look like? Who would they have on their friends list? What kind of status updates, pictures, and interests would be listed there? Step back in time and put yourself in their shoes, and then create a Facebook page for your explorer that reflects all of their interests, goals, and accomplishments. Your Task Your teacher will divide your class into 8 groups, with each group representing one of 5 selected Conquistadors. To do your research, you will need to carefully follow directions and complete the steps outlined in this quest. Your final product will be to create a Facebook page for your explorer. Your teacher will provide you with a rubric to follow. An example on a completed Facebook page on Christopher Columbus is available by clicking here. Project Roles:

Your teacher will assign your group a specific explorer. Group members may work together to find the information, but all group members are expected to contribute. All group members will follow the links provided and cooperate to gather information for the project. You will decide as a group who will be responsible for gathering each part of the data as outlined below in the process section. All group members will gather photographs, maps, and illustrations (as directed in the Process section below) to add to the Facebook page. All members will be editors and check their work for correct spelling, grammar, punctuation, and completeness. Each member of the group must document where you get all of your information! You must include a Reference section on your log. All group members will have equal access to the Facebook template and cooperatively create the Facebook page, including all of the information as identified in the rubric. Groups will present their Facebook page to the class as part of your overall grade.

Helpful Links You may find the following websites helpful as you conduct your research. You should also read the TeachingFlorida.org articles on the individual explorers, available by clicking on their names below (and visit the further reading links in their articles.) You

may also conduct your own individual web search, but be sure to carefully evaluate any websites you find for accuracy and authenticity.

The Process There are four main areas of research within the project. Students will need to designate a task to each member of the group. The four areas are:
1. 2. 3. 4.

Page Page Page Page

1: 2: 3: 4:

the Wall Information Photos Quotes/Adjectives

Page 1: The Wall All of this information must be included on your Wall:
1. 2.

3. 4. 5.

The same profile picture of your explorer must be included on every page throughout the Facebook profile. 5 posts on the Wall, either to or from your explorer, or a combination of both. These posts should be relevant to activities that took place in la Florida. You must include a date on the postings. 6 friends, with pictures, that had a direct and relevant connection to your explorer. Networks (connections), religion, birthday, and hometown portion complete with factual information. Remember that EVERYTHING you use, including pictures, must have sources listed in the reference section!

Page 2: Information

All of this information must be included on your Information page:

1.

2. 3.

4. 5. 6.

All basic information is complete. Networks (connections), birthday, hometown, relationship status (was your explorer married, etc), political views, and religious views. Personal information should reflect songs and books of that time period. Activities and interests must contain factual information. What did your explorer do before they became a Conquistador? Did they have any hobbies? Publish a book? Own land? Do some research and be creative in your posting! Two photo albums. Both should have one photograph representing the main idea of the album along with a description. Contact information should reflect landmarks in la Florida, ship names, ports, etc. Remember that EVERYTHING you use, including pictures, must have sources listed in the reference section!

Page 3: Photos All of this information must be included on your Photos page: Include at least 5 photographs, maps, etc. that are different from the profile picture. 2. Photo albums are listed in the bottom right hand corner and reflect the same information listed on the Information page. 3. Remember, EVERYTHING you use, including pictures, must have the source listed in the reference section!
1.

Page 4: Quotes and Adjectives All of this information must be included on the Quotes page: Identify one quote attributed to your explorer, the source of the quotation, and the date. A quote regarding la Florida is preferable, but not required. 2. If you are unable to find a direct quote made by your explorer, you may use a quote by someone in their friends list that is about your explorer. You must list the source and date. 3. Include 3 adjectives that you feel best describes the character of your explorer.
1.

Completion of Assignment Once your group has compiled all of the required information (all 4 process pieces and Reference information), you will compile it into a comprehensive Facebook page. Remember to refer to your rubric often to ensure you are including everything required for full credit.
