Rationale: The main purpose of this unit is to help 4th grade students learn about Saturn and its influence to our solar system. Further students knowledge of Saturns locations and geographical features to enhance their understanding of Saturn. Finally students will continue their development of writing skills with an understanding of fiction about Saturn. Objectives of lesson: After lecture, PPT, and discussion, student will demonstrate understanding of characteristics of Saturn (in terms of history, location and geographical features) on a KWL chart or on an advanced organizer with 90% accuracy. Given solar system map the student will locate Saturn with guided instruction with 100% accuracy. Lesson Opening: 6-8 minutes total The students will walk into the class with the Music of Saturn playing. These are real recordings done by NASA found at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pGeWBiLVn8g&feature=endscreen and on the board will be an image of Saturn. Students will sit down and put names on paper and wait for teacher to come to front of class Students returning to class Outside door decorated as solar system Students walk through enter into space (have a projection of stars on the wall) Teacher waiting inside Hands each student packet Welcome back to solar explorations this week we are visiting a new planet. Please take your planet itinerary, find your seat, and put name your on the top right of the paper. I will begin instruction when I walk to the front of the room please wait quietly and decorate the front page of your planet itinerary with a drawing of our planet for the week. Allow all students time to enter the classroom and begin passport designs are complete 3-4 minutes Begin instruction 3-4 minutes Please put down all drawing utensils and face forward. Who has an idea as to where we are visiting this week? Await answers This week we are going to visit the 6th planet in the solar system. It is the 2nd biggest planet and has the most notable rings. Does anyone know the name of the planet using these clues? Await answers Thats correct we are visiting Saturn. Connection: 2-3 minutes Can anyone tell me anything that you already know about Saturn? How about something that connects with the prior planets we visited? Await answers ----take 10 (write answers on board) Those were great answers! It sounds like you know a lot of information. This week we are going to learn about a lot of these different things and a lot of new things as well. Instructional Strategies/Process: 34-36 minutes Please turn to the next page in your packet. What do you see there? Answer from studentKWL chart

What do you remember from KWL chart? Answer from student --- did one on prior unit What do write under the K? Answer from student things we already know You already know a lot of information (point to board) please write these on the KWL chart under K. Teacher walks around to monitor. This should take about 2-3 minutes to brainstorm and write. (this is indirect instruction) Did anyone think of anything that was not listed on the board? Write responses on the board 2-3 minutes You might remember that the W in the chart is for what you want to learn. Please take 2-3 minutes to write a list of anything that you want to learn about Saturn. Please list this on the chart under W. Teacher walks around to make sure they are writing Ask students who would like to share any wants Write on board We will revisit this after our lesson today to see if we have covered anything you wanted to learn. This should take 1-2 minutes Please turn to the next page in the packet. Notes page Pull up PPT The next page in your planet itinerary is a map of Saturn Await answer Can anyone tell me what Saturn is made of? Await answer Made of Hydrogen (97%), Helium (3%), methane gas (0.05%) The answer to these questions and more will be answered with the PPT. As you can see on your study guide pages you will be looking for historical and geographical information as well as location and answers to questions in various forms. Please take a moment to read over the information that you will be looking for during the presentation. Please hold questions until we have completed the geographical information. Instruction for PPT should take 2-3 minutes Present PPT presentation (see attached notes) End presentation and turn on lights Products: KWL filled in Advance organizer Maps (Solar System) Assessment: Ungraded (informal) 1. Questions 2. Review Closure: 8-10 minutes At this time we are going to turn back to the KWL page of your planet itinerary. As a class we are going to come up a few things that we can place under the L column. Does anyone want to share what they learned from the presentation? Await answers and write on board 3-4 minutes These are some excellent examples of information learned from the presentation. Please write these down under the L column along with 2 things that you learned that are not listed.

Walk around class and observe (engage with various students) 3-4 minutes Next we are going to get out our Saturn weight. Please come to my desk when you are called to obtain your weight which will be used in your homework assignment. While you are waiting please write down the homework listed on the board. At desk: have website pulled up http://solarsystem.nasa.gov/kids/index.cfm ask student for weight. Record on a sticky note and tell student to affix to homework agenda. Homework: 1-2 minutes Students please write in your agenda to complete Journal entry number 1 for Saturn in your Solar System journal. Your topic for tonight is to write about living on the planet Saturn. Please make sure you include detail about your home, favorite foods, how you look, what a day in your life is like, and whats great about Saturn. Please make sure that your parents review the week project details and sign the form that information has been received. Remember the project is a test grade.
