Literacy Lesson Plan Word Study-Compound Words

Lesson Objective:
For students to understand that two individual words combined to make one word is what makes a compound word. To be able to brainstorm, together as a group, a list of compound words.

Preparation:
Whiteboard

Lesson:
Introduction: Group Discussion (all students together on the floor) Time: 5 minutes Ask if anyone has heard of the words compound word. Does anyone know what a compound word is? Compound words are made by combing two words to make a new word. Eg bed & time combined become bedtime, tooth & brush; toothbrush

Main Lesson: Individual work back at their personal desks Time: 12 minutes Have students get quietly set to the task. Observe for struggling starters and assist them. Observe sitting posture and pencil grip. Early finishers can work together to come up with other words that contain the letter Xx. They can write those words into their jotters and practice the letter Xx in different colours/fancy pants etc.

Closure: Work to the front of the room (all students pack up, move onto the floor) Time: 3 minutes Ask students to gather on the floor and invite some to share other Xx words they came up with. Make note to inform some students that you will ask them to share some of their other Xx words.

Evaluation: Formative this lesson will be devoted to observing the students handwriting. How they manage the letter Xx, both in upper and lower case formation i.e. did they write within the lines, did the lowercase x appear correctly
