English/Language Arts Lesson Plan: Resource Room Students: David, Kyle, Savanna, Lena, Emma September 27, 2013

st th Grade: 1 5 Subject: Language Arts: Comprehension, Decoding and Writing Standards: Kindergarten Level EL.K.1 2006 - READING: Word Recognition, Fluency, and Vocabulary Development Students know about letters, words, and sounds. They apply this knowledge to read simple sentences. EL.K.3 2006 - READING: Comprehension and Analysis of Literary Text Students listen and respond to stories based on well-known characters, themes, plots (what happens in a story), and settings (where a story takes place). Students will listen and respond to grade-level-appropriate fiction, such as classic and contemporary stories, Mother Goose nursery rhymes and other poems, songs, folktales, and plays. EL.K.6 2006 - WRITING: English Language Conventions Students begin to learn the written conventions of Standard English. SS.K.3 2007 - Geography Students learn that maps and globes are different representations of the Earth's surface and begin to explore the physical and human geographic characteristics of their school, neighborhood and community. 1st Grade Level EL.1.1 2006 - READING: Word Recognition, Fluency, and Vocabulary Development Students understand the basic features of words. They see letter patterns and know how to translate them into spoken language by using phonics (an understanding of the different letters that make different sounds), syllables, and word parts (-s, -ed, -ing). They apply this knowledge to achieve fluent (smooth and clear) oral and silent reading. EL.1.3 2006 - READING: Comprehension and Analysis of Literary Text Students read and respond to a wide variety of children's literature. Students begin to read a wide variety of fiction, such as classic and contemporary stories, poems, folktales, songs, plays, and other genres. EL.1.6 2006 - WRITING: English Language Conventions Students write using Standard English conventions appropriate to this grade level. SS.1.3 2007 - Geography Students will identify the basic elements of maps and globes and explain basic facts concerning the relationship of the sun to daily and seasonal weather. They will identify selected geographic characteristics of their home, school and neighborhood. 1. Materials: a. How to Make an Apple Pie and See the World by Marjorie Priceman b. Create a graphic organizer on the board for student to complete. c. Introduce a world map. Identify countries and ingredients from the book. d. Introduce a recipe and skills of following directions. e. Follow a recipe to make an apple treat. f. Travel writing prompt. Motivation: Introduce the book How to Make an Apple Pie and See the World. Tell students that we are going to have an adventure and make a treat just like the girl in the book. Goals for Learner: a. Listen and comprehend the story. b. Complete the graphic organizer. c. Compare US map from Johnny Appleseed lesson to world map in this lesson. d. Identify places traveled too. e. Complete suitcase and passport. f. Follow a recipe. g. Complete writing prompt with coherent thoughts, complete sentences, capital letters and punctuation. Content and Procedures: a. Yesterday, we went on an adventure with Johnny Appleseed. Today, we are going to go on an adventure around the world using our imaginations, of course. b. Ask the students if they are going to travel around the world, what might they need to keep their things in? A suitcase. Pass out the suitcases. Tell the students that they might need a map so they dont get lost along the way. Tell the students that this is a different map than the one we saw yesterday. This map is a map of the world. State that in the story that we are going to read today, we will visit place all over the world and we will mark them on the map. Have the students glue the map to the front of their suitcases. c. Read How to Make an Apple Pie and See the World. d. Tell the students that just like the girl in the story we are going to collect ingredients from around the world. Discuss the places the girl went and what ingredients she picked up there. Put flag and ingredient magnets on the board as you discuss each. Have the students travel around the room to different stations to glue the flag and ingredient to their passport and receive a passport stamp. e. When students are finished, discuss with students if they could travel anywhere where would they go and why. Complete travel writing prompt. (Differentiation: David will need the story written for him based on his dictation.) f. Tell students that since we do not have an oven we cannot make an apple pie but we can make an apple treat. Get out sugar cookie crust, apples, peanut butter topping/sauce and caramel sauce. Help children assemble ingredients based on a recipe and eat.
