s of the historical development of law in England and Wales, and the alternatives to settling disputes in court. You will then come back into class to present your responses. In Activity 2, you will read another case presented to you, and work in groups to answer questions on the case, then present your responses to the class. Activity 1 Scenario Exercise Read the scenario below and prepare responses to the four situations presented, emphasising the legal points of each: Scenario: Let us assume that an Act of Parliament states: It shall be an offence for any person to wear a red tie in a public place. Do you consider that an offence has been committed in the following situations? Give reasons for your answers. a. John wears a red tie as a band around his Panama hat in Londons Trafalgar Square. - Yes. London's Trafalgar Square is a public place, the offence constitutes wearing a red tie in a public place, therefore is an offence. It doesn't matter where it is worn, it is worn on the person and in a public place it is an offence. b. Garys trouser belt has broken, and he is using a red tie to support his trousers. Peter is shopping in the High Street. - Yes. The high street is a public place, the offence constitutes wearing a red tie in a public place, therefore is an offence. It doesn't matter where it is worn, it is worn on the person and in a public place it is an offence. c. Ahmed is wearing a pink tie in his local cinema. - No. The tie is pink not red so this does not constitute an offence. d. Kara is wearing a red scarf around her neck as a fashion accessory at an art gallery exhibition. - No. It is a scarf which is red and not a tie, so this is not an offence. Bring your responses back into the class ready to talk through each of the four situations.
