MENU PRINCIPAL

IN THIS MODULE, WE WILL DISCUSS THE PERFORMANCE FUNCTIONS OF THE PDCS. THE PERFORMANCE FUNCTIONS ARE NOT ESSENTIAL FOR ANY FLIGHT SEGMENT, HOWEVER, THEY ARE HELPFUL IN EVALUATING ALTERNATIVE FLIGHT PROFILES, AND PROVIDING USEFUL INFORMATION FOR TRIP PLANNING. THE PERFORMANCE FUNCTIONS DISPLAY INFORMATION APPLICABLE TO THE MODE SELECTED ON THE MODE SELECTOR SWITCH.

PRESSING THE DESIRED KEY DISPLAYS A PAGE OF CORRESPONDING PERFORMANCE FUNCTION DATA. ALL FUNCTIONS, HOWEVER, ARE NOT AVAILABLE IN EVERY FLIGHT MODE. FOR EXAMPLE, THE FUEL FUNCTION IS ONLY AVAILABLE IN THE CRUISE OR CONTINUOUS FLIGHT MODES. LET'S NOW LOOK AT EACH OF THESE PERFORMANCE FUNCTIONS, HOW THEY ARE DISPLAYED, AND HOW TO USE THE INFORMATION.

THE ALTITUDE INTERCEPT KEY PERMITS YOU TO COMPUTE TIME AND DISTANCE REQUIRED TO REACH A DESIRED ALTITUDE. THERE ARE FIVE ALTITUDE INTERCEPT PAGES; HOWEVER, THEY ARE ONLY AVAILABLE IN THE CLIMB AND DESCENT MODES. PAGE ONE IS FOR MOST ECONOMICAL CLIMB. PAGE TWO, MAXIMUM RATE OF CLIMB. PAGE THREE, CLIMB WITH MANUALLY SELECTED AIRSPEEDS. PAGE FOUR, MOST ECONOMICAL DESCENT. PAGE FIVE, DESCENT WITH MANUALLY SELECTED AIRSPEEDS.

IF THE SYSTEM IS IN A CLIMB OR DESCENT MODE, PRESSING THE INTERCEPT KEY WILL BRING UP THE FUNCTION PAGE CORRESPONDING TO THE MODE. THE ALTITUDE INTERCEPT PAGE MAY BE CHANGED BY USING THE PAGE KEYS TO SELECT THE DISPLAY OF DESIRED DATA.

INITIALLY, THE GO TO FLIGHT LEVEL LINE WILL DISPLAY A PRE-PROGRAMMED ALTITUDE OF FOUR THOUSAND FEET ABOVE OR BELOW PRESENT ALTITUDE, DEPENDING ON THE CLIMB OR DESCENT PAGE SELECTED. THE WIND VALUE DISPLAYED INITIALLY, WILL ALWAYS BE THE WIND THE COMPUTER IS UTILIZING AT THE TIME. FOUR ENTRIES ARE INVOLVED IN EACH INTERCEPT SITUATION: FLIGHT LEVEL, DISTANCE, TIME, AND WIND. WHEN YOU ENTER THE NEW DATA, FOR EXAMPLE, AN ALTITUDE DIFFERENT THAN THE PRE-PROGRAMMED FOUR THOUSAND FEET, THE COMPUTER WILL THEN RECALCULATE THE OTHER VALUES. IF DESIRED, THE WIND CAN BE CHANGED, BUT SUCH A CHANGE IS RESTRICTED TO THE PARTICULAR PAGE DISPLAYED ONLY. NO OTHER PDCS WIND VALUE WILL BE ALTERED. (pause4) NOW, LET'S LOOK AT A PERTINENT ASPECT OF WIND PERFORMANCE.

THE WIND KEY PROVIDES ACCESS TO THREE PAGES OF WIND COMPONENT INFORMATION. PAGE ONE IS BASED ON DME 1 DATA. PAGE TWO IS BASED ON DME 2 DATA. PAGE THREE IS BASED ON MANUAL INPUT OF WIND DIRECTION, WIND VELOCITY AND AIRPLANE COURSE.

PRESSING THE WIND KEY BRINGS UP PAGE ONE OF THE WIND PERFORMANCE FUNCTION. LINE TWO IS THE DISTANCE TO DME ONE. LINE THREE IS THE CALCULATED WIND COMPONENT BASED ON DME 1 DATA. A MINUS SIGN DENOTES A HEADWIND. NOTE THAT THE BOTTOM LINE INDICATES NO UPDATE. UPDATING REFERS TO THE PROCEDURE FOR ENTERING THE DISPLAYED WIND. LET'S LOOK AT THIS PROCEDURE.

IF IT IS DESIRED TO USE A WIND COMPONENT IN THE PDCS COMPUTATIONS, YOU MUST PUT THIS WIND IN THE COMPUTER. THIS PROCESS IS KNOWN AS UPDATING. ONLY THOSE WINDS ENTERED WITH THE WIND KEY AND UPDATE PROCEDURE WILL BE MAINTAINED IN COMPUTER MEMORY. OTHERWISE THE PDCS WILL ASSUME ZERO WIND. FIRST, PRESS THE CLEAR KEY. THE NO WILL BE REPLACED BY YES ON THE BOTTOM LINE, AND THE CARET WILL FLASH. NEXT, PRESS THE ENTER KEY. THE CARET STOPS FLASHING AND THE COMPUTER IS UPDATED TO USE THIS WIND COMPONENT FOR COMPUTATIONS.

THE LEFT DISPLAY, FOR PAGE TWO, IS SIMILAR TO PAGE ONE, BUT USES DME 2 DATA. THE COMPUTED WIND COMPONENT ON PAGES ONE AND TWO IS CORRECT ONLY IF YOU ARE FLYING DIRECTLY TO, OR FROM, THE DME STATION. IF THE AIRPLANE IS WITHIN FIVE MILES OF THE DME STATION, THE COMPUTER WILL NOT ACCEPT AN UPDATE. THE DME DISTANCE, WIND, AND UPDATE LINES WILL SHOW BLANK. WHEN DME INPUTS ARE NOT AVAILABLE, PAGE THREE CAN BE USED BY ENTERING WIND DIRECTION, WIND VELOCITY AND AIRPLANE COURSE. THE PDCS WILL COMPUTE THE WIND COMPONENT. YOU MUST UPDATE THE COMPUTER IF YOU WISH THE COMPONENT TO BE INCLUDED IN ALL PERFORMANCE CALCULATIONS. (pause4) NEXT, WE'LL EXAMINE THE PERFORMANCE INFORMATION PROVIDED BY THE FLIGHT LEVEL KEY.

THE FLIGHT LEVEL KEY IN ALL FLIGHT MODES, PROVIDES INFORMATION ON BUFFET MARGIN, OPTIMUM FLIGHT LEVEL, MAXIMUM ALTITUDE CAPABILITY, AND WIND CHANGE, ALSO KNOWN AS WIND TRADE. THERE ARE THREE FLIGHT LEVEL PAGES. PAGE ONE IS FOR MAXIMUM ECONOMY SPEED. PAGE TWO IS FOR LONG RANGE CRUISE SPEED. PAGE THREE PROVIDES DATA FOR MANUALLY ENTERED AIRSPEEDS.

THE SECOND LINE SHOWS THE MANEUVER MARGIN AND FLIGHT LEVEL AT THE OPTIMUM ALTITUDE. THE THIRD LINE SHOWS THE MAXIMUM POSSIBLE ALTITUDE. LINE FOUR SHOWS THE PRESENT FLIGHT LEVEL OF 3 1 0 AND MANEUVER MARGIN. NOTICE THAT THE CARET IS ON THIS LINE, SHOWING THAT THIS NUMBER CAN BE CHANGED FROM THE KEYBOARD.

MENU PRINCIPAL

SUPPOSE FOR EXAMPLE, THAT YOU WANT TO SHOW THE MANEUVER MARGIN AT FLIGHT LEVEL TWO SIX ZERO. JUST ENTER THAT ALTITUDE ON THIS LINE AND THE PDCS WILL SHOW YOU THE CORRESPONDING MANEUVER MARGIN AND, ON THE LAST LINE, THE CHANGE IN WIND COMPONENT NECESSARY TO ACHIEVE YOUR PRESENT FUEL MILEAGE AT THE NEWLY ENTERED ALTITUDE. IN THIS EXAMPLE, TO CHANGE THE FLIGHT LEVEL 2 6 0, FROM THE OPTIMUM FLIGHT LEVEL OF 3 5 0, WOULD REQUIRE THAT THE WIND COMPONENT BE REDUCED BY 40 KNOTS.

THE MANUAL PAGE HAS AN ADDITIONAL ASTERISKED LINE MACH IAS. THIS PAGE WILL INITIALLY DISPLAY PRESENT AIRPLANE SPEED AND FLIGHT LEVEL. OTHER VALUES MAY BE ENTERED TO EVALUATE SPEED SCHEDULES AND ALTERNATE ALTITUDES. IF A CRUISE SPEED OR ALTITUDE IS ENTERED THAT EXCEEDS THE AIRPLANE CERTIFIED LIMITS, OR THE PERFORMANCE LIMITS OF THE AIRPLANE, THE DISPLAY WILL INDICATE AN INVALID INPUT. (pause4) LET'S LOOK AT THE TEMPERATURE KEY.

THE TEMPERATURE FUNCTION WILL DISPLAY TWO PAGES. PAGE ONE DISPLAYS DEVIATION FROM STANDARD ATMOSPHERE IN DEGREES CENTIGRADE, TOTAL AIR TEMPERATURE, STATIC AIR TEMPERATURE IN DEGREES CENTIGRADE AND DEGREES FAHRENHEIT, AND TRUE AIR SPEED IN KNOTS. PAGE TWO IS USED TO CALCULATE DEVIATION FROM STANDARD ATMOSPHERE IF STATIC AIR TEMPERATURE AND FLIGHT LEVEL ARE ENTERED. LIKEWISE, STATIC AIR TEMPERATURE MAY BE CALCULATED BY ENTERING DEVIATION AND FLIGHT LEVEL. IF THE SENSED TOTAL AIR TEMPERATURE OR ENTERED DATA EXCEEDS ESTABLISHED LIMITS, THE DISPLAY WILL INDICATE INVALID. (pause4) LET'S NOW CONSIDER THE FUNCTION OF THE RANGE KEY.

THE RANGE FUNCTION DISPLAYS THE RANGE AND TIME TO RESERVE PLUS ALTERNATE FUEL LEVELS UNDER SEVERAL CONDITIONS. WITH THE MODE SELECTOR POSITIONED TO CRUISE, CONTINUOUS OR HOLD, PRESS THE RANGE KEY. THE FIVE PAGES OF RANGE REPRESENT FIVE CONDITIONS. (pause3) THE INFORMATION PROVIDED IS SIMILAR ON EACH PAGE. LINE TWO IS RANGE IN NAUTICAL MILES AND TIME REMAINING TO RESERVE PLUS ALTERNATE FUEL LEVELS. LINE THREE IS RANGE AND TIME TO EMPTY TANKS. LINE FOUR IS THE FLIGHT LEVEL USED FOR CALCULATING THIS DISPLAY. LINE FIVE IS THE WIND COMPONENT USED FOR THIS CALCULATION. THE BOTTOM LINES ON PAGES 3 AND 4 INDICATE MACH NUMBER AND INDICATED AIRSPEED. (pause2) PAGE FIVE, THE HOLD PAGE, DESCRIBES THE TIME REMAINING AT YOUR PRESENT ALTITUDE. OTHER ALTITUDES CAN BE ENTERED FOR CALCULATION PURPOSES.

PRESSING THE RANGE KEY DISPLAYS PERFORMANCE DATA FOR THE ENGAGED MODE. IF YOU WISH TO INVESTIGATE SEVERAL SPEED SCHEDULES, CALL UP PAGE 3, RANGE MANUAL. (pause2) /PRESENT FLIGHT LEVEL, WIND, AND SPEEDS WILL BE DISPLAYED. YOU MAY INVESTIGATE ANY SPEED, ALTITUDE, OR WIND, BY ENTERING THE DATA IN THE APPROPRIATE POSITION ON THE DISPLAY. IF A VALUE BEYOND THE AIRPLANE LIMITS IS ENTERED, THE DISPLAY WILL INDICATE INVALID. (pause4) WE'LL LOOK AT THE FUEL KEY NEXT.

THE FUEL FUNCTION IS OPERATIONAL ONLY WHEN THE MODE SELECTOR IS IN CRUISE, OR CONTINUOUS. THE FUEL FUNCTION IS DISPLAYED BY PRESSING THE FUEL KEY. THERE ARE FOUR FUEL PAGES. PAGE ONE DISPLAYS DATA FOR ECONOMY CRUISE. PAGE TWO IS THE SAME, EXCEPT IT IS LONG RANGE CRUISE. PAGE THREE IS THE SAME AS ECONOMY, EXCEPT MANUAL SPEED IS USED. PAGE FOUR USES CONTINUOUS ENGINE OUT DATA.

WHEN YOU PRESS THE FUEL KEY, THE SCREEN WILL DISPLAY FUEL PERFORMANCE DATA FOR THE ENGAGED CRUISE MODE. IF NO CRUISE PAGE IS ENGAGED WHEN YOU PRESS THE KEY, THE SCREEN WILL AUTOMATICALLY DISPLAY PAGE ONE OF THE FUEL PERFORMANCE DATA. IF A DIFFERENT PAGE OF FUEL PERFORMANCE DATA IS DESIRED, SIMPLY PUSH THE PAGE KEYS UNTIL THE DESIRED PAGE IS DISPLAYED.

MENU PRINCIPAL

THE DATA LINES ARE THE SAME FOR EACH FUEL PAGE. LINE TWO IS DISTANCE TO DESTINATION IN NAUTICAL MILES. LINE THREE IS RESERVE PLUS ALTERNATE FUEL QUANTITY. LINE FOUR DISPLAYS AN ESTIMATE OF FUEL REMAINING OVER DESTINATION. TO UTILIZE THE FUEL FUNCTION, ENTER THE DISTANCE TO DESTINATION ON LINE TWO, AND INSURE THAT THE WIND COMPONENT ON LINE FIVE IS CURRENT. FUEL OVER DESTINATION WILL BE COMPUTED AND DISPLAYED AUTOMATICALLY. ENTERING A WIND VALUE ON THE FUEL PAGES WILL NOT AFFECT THE WIND VALUES ON OTHER PAGES.

PRESS THE GROUND SPEED KEY FOR THE SINGLE GROUND SPEED DISPLAY PAGE. GROUND SPEED IS DISPLAYED ON LINE ONE, THE TRUE AIRSPEED, DISPLAYED ON LINE TWO, AND THE WIND COMPONENT DISPLAYED ON LINE THREE. LINES FOUR AND FIVE ARE TIME AND DISTANCE, IN NAUTICAL MILES, TO DESTINATION. ENTER DISTANCE AND THE COMPUTER WILL ALSO DISPLAY TIME. (pause4) NOW, LET'S EXAMINE THE V-REF FUNCTION.

THE V-REF FUNCTION DISPLAYS REFERENCE SPEEDS FOR LANDING, AND THE CURRENT GROSS WEIGHT. PRESS THE V-REF KEY FOR THE ONE PAGE DISPLAY. THE SPEEDS IN KNOTS, INDICATED AIRSPEED, ARE COMPUTED FOR FLAP SETTINGS OF 40, 30 AND 15 BASED ON CURRENT GROSS WEIGHT. THE GROSS WEIGHT MAY BE CHANGED MANUALLY TO PROVIDE V-REF FOR LANDING AT OTHER ESTIMATED GROSS WEIGHTS. REMEMBER THAT THE GO-AROUND FLIGHT MODE WILL ALSO DISPLAY V-REF SPEEDS. (pause4) NOW, LET'S LOOK AT THE TRIP KEY.

THE TRIP FUNCTION IS USEFUL FOR FLIGHT PLANNING WHEN A COMPUTER OR PRE-PRINT FLIGHT PLAN IS NOT AVAILABLE, AND CAN ONLY BE USED AFTER THE LOAD DATA HAS BEEN ENTERED INTO THE COMPUTER. PRESSING THE TRIP KEY DISPLAYS THE TRIP PAGE. WHEN THE TRIP DISTANCE IS ENTERED, THE OPTIMUM FLIGHT LEVEL FOR THAT TRIP DISTANCE IS DISPLAYED. IF TEMPERATURE DEVIATION AND WIND COMPONENT ARE ENTERED, THE COMPUTED FLIGHT LEVEL WILL BE MORE ACCURATE. WIND ENTERED AT THIS TIME IS VALID FOR THIS PAGE ONLY. IF A WIND IS NOT ENTERED, THE TRIP WILL BE BASED ON ZERO WIND. (pause4) FINALLY, LET'S EXAMINE THE FAILURE AND ALERT MESSAGE DISPLAYS.

A BUFFET MARGIN ALERT IS AVAILABLE IN MOST FLIGHT MODES AND FOR SEVERAL PERFORMANCE FUNCTIONS. WHEN THE SPEED OR ALTITUDE FOR THE MODE, EITHER DISPLAYED OR ENGAGED, WILL PUT THE AIRPLANE CLOSE TO BUFFET, A BUFFET MARGIN ALERT WILL BE DISPLAYED. THIS ALERT MESSAGE WILL DISPLAY THE PAGE TITLE THAT GENERATED THE ALERT. THE ALERT MAY BE CANCELLED BY PRESSING THE RECALL KEY; PROVIDED THAT THE BUFFET MARGIN IS GREATER THAN ONE POINT ONE FIVE G's.

THE PDCS WILL DISPLAY FAILURE MESSAGES DURING THE STANDBY SELF-TEST IF A FAILURE HAS OCCURRED. SOME FAILURES WILL NOT RENDER THE PDCS TOTALLY INOPERATIVE, BUT REDUCE THE SYSTEM CAPABILITIES. IF INVALID IS DISPLAYED DURING SELF-TEST, THE FAILED COMPONENT WILL BE LISTED AND THE PDCS WILL BE INOPERATIVE. (pause3) VALID WILL BE DISPLAYED IF THE SYSTEM IS OPERATIVE AND THE FAILED COMPONENTS WILL BE LISTED. IF USE EPR LIMIT IS DISPLAYED, THE FUEL SUMMATION UNIT HAS FAILED. ONLY LIMIT PAGES WILL BE AVAILABLE IN THE FLIGHT MODES. THE DISPLAY DME FAIL INDICATES FAILURE OF THE DME SYSTEMS. THE AUTOMATIC UPDATE OF THE WIND PERFORMANCE FUNCTION IS UNUSABLE.
