Lesson Planning Sheet Title: Distance Time Graphs Learning Objectives: By the end of the lesson: All students

ts should be able to interpret a distance time graph Most students should be able to interpret and plot a distance time graph. Some students should be able to interpret, plot and measure speed from a distance time graph Key words: Time, Distance, Speed, Gradient Learning Activities Starter/Introduction Students are to tell the story of how the amount of water in sink changes over the course of a washing up cycle. By thinking how depth changes with time students should be recognise that the graph is a picture that quickly and easily tells a story. The more accurate the graph the more detailed the story. Students could work in pairs where one plots the graph and the other has to interpret what is happening as the depth of water changes over time. Development Using the second slide pose the questions below the graph one at a time with the next questions covered up. Students can present their interpretations on mini-whiteboards for the teacher to see and assess. Have the class explain how the graph can be interpreted in such a way. For example, pose the question, Why does a horizontal line show that the car is stopped? Ideal response is that not distance is being covered. Students should be able to work through the third slide independently. Have a student demonstrate their interpretations at the front of the class before the plenary. Plenary Hand out graph paper and ensure that all students have the necessary equipment to plot the graph. Allow plenty of time for the graph to be drawn to scale. When finished the students could stick their graph on the whiteboard to see that every one has interpreted (or at least, should have) the story the same. Differentiation More able: Students could plot non-linear graphs. Such as filling up the following jars with a constant pouring of liquid. Resources: Graph Paper Rulers, Pencils, Erasers

Less Able Providing the students with axes that are already drawn and scaled will allow them to focus on plotting the story.
