MATH 410: HOMEWORK 1 DUE THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 12 From Bak and Newmans Complex Analysis, third edition p.

18-9 #1, 3, 4, 5, 12(a),(c) (1) Describe geometrically the sets of points determined by the relations: (a) |z + i 1 | < 2; 2 (b) 5 > Re{z } > 1; (c) (Im{z })2 Re{z }; (d) |2i z | = |z + 1 + 3i|; (e) Re{(2 3i)z } > 0; (f) 2Re{z } < |z |2 . (2) Show that the sum of the n nth roots of every nonzero complex number w is zero for n > 1. (Hint: Think graphically and also take a look at #13 from page 19 of Bak and Newman.) (3) (extra credit question) (a) Give an example of a smooth function of two real variables whose Taylor expansion does not converge in any neighborhood of a certain point. Justify your answer. (b) Give an example of a smooth function of two real variables whose Taylor expansion converges but not to the original function in the neighborhood of at least one point. Justify your answer. (Hint: Think about what are generally called at functions.)
