Title: ______Ocean Acidification____________________________________ Author/Source: Scott C. Doney___________________________________________ While reading the article, highlight words or phrases that require definitions or clarifications What are the AUTHORs major ideas, concepts or key points? A: List the major ideas, concepts or key points- point by point: Hawaii sees carbon dioxide levels increase and decrease sharply in step of the northern hemisphere growing season. In the end of the year the gas always ends up higher than 12 months before. Much of the Carbon is destined to remain there. The gas is about 30% more abundant than it was a few hundreds years ago. The supply of carbon comes from burning fossil fuels such as coal, oil, and natural gas. About 40% of carbon dioxide is derived from fossil fuels remains in the atmosphere. The ocean has absorbed carbon since the industrial revolution. Coral reefs are being affected by carbon. Marine mammals shells are being hurt over time. Shells may also break from temperature and pressure. Coral reefs could be extinct due to ocean acidification. B: Summarize the AUTHORs main point or idea- at LEAST 1-2 paragraphs: Over the past years the carbon in our oceans is increasing over time. It started ever since the beginning of the industrial revolution. Since our water are being more acidic it is affecting the earth atmosphere. About 40% of of carbon dioxide remains in the atmosphere. Also the gas is 30% more abundant than it was a few hundred years ago. Not only is our marine life animals being affected by their shells but also the coral reefs. C: Write a reaction paragraph to the article stating your own thoughts on the topic, using specific citations from the article to support your views: I feel that Ocean acidification is a problem and it is hurting our environment. Every year gas is being absorb into our oceans. We need to change in order to have a healthier planet. We wont be able to change it one day but if we make a small change by wasting less carbon into the air it will help our oceans little by little. Since water is a major resources it will benefit us we change now rather than later.

So What? Carbon dioxide affects our ecosystem: Shells become damage coral reefs are being destroyed CO2 stays in our atmosphere Says Who? Roger Reville and Hans Suess, Geochemist at Scripps Institute of Oceanography in CA Charles Keeling Nicolas Gruber, University of California Christopher Langdon, Marine Biologist at the University of Miami Rik Wanninkhof, National Oceanic and atmospheric a dministrations atlantic oceanography and Meteorological Laboratory What if..? What if we keep on letting CO2 going into our oceans. Many marine animals would die due to being exposed to too much CO2. The coral reefs would die out and many planktons would be affected, which would mean many animals proteins would be gone. What Does This Remind Me Of? This reminds me of The Lorax. Its similar because the animals had to leave due to the environment being gone. Instead of the animals leaving the coral reef are being affected and the animals shells and being broken down slowly.
