? MODELING OSMOSIS (LAB) PROBLEM: Which way will water flow when a raw egg is placed in 250ml of vinegar?

HYPOTHESIS: If a raw egg is placed in vinegar (water) and left for four days, then the water will flow into the egg from an area of high concentration through the membrane into an area of low concentration causing the egg to expand. THEORY: Osmosis is the diffusion of water of water from an area of high concentration to an area of low concentration across a selectively permeable membrane. I hypothesize that water will flow from the vinegar into the egg. I hypothesize this because vinegar is 95% water and eggs are only 74% water. The vinegar contains more water than the egg, so I think that the water molecules will transfer into the egg from the vinegar because in osmosis water molecules transfer from the substance that has more water molecules into the substance that has less. PROCEDURE: 1. Measure circumference of a raw egg using string and a ruler in cm. 2. Place egg in beaker and fill with 250 mL of vinegar. 3. Record observations. 4. Measure circumference for 4 days and record observations. DATA/OBSERVATIONS: DAYS 1 CIRCUMFERENCE (cm) 14cm LIQUID LEVEL (Ml) 300ml OBSERVATIONS *Bubbles on eggshell *50 ml displacement *Looks bigger inside beaker *Egg shell was mostly dissolved *Foam in the water

CONCLUSION In this lab we investigated the process and effects of osmosis. After 4 days, water molecules from the vinegar, which has high concentration, traveled through the selectively permeable membrane and into the egg, which has a lower concentration. My groups egg expanded 3cm. Compared to the entire 7th grade, my groups egg expanded 0.3cm more. I hypothesized that water molecules would transfer from the vinegar into the egg, expanding it. My hypothesis was correct for 100% of the class.

ANALYSIS

1) The eggshell dissolved because it was made of calcium carbonate, which was dissolved by the weak acid in the vinegar, revealing the selectively permeable membrane. 2) In the period 7 class, group 3s egg expanded by 4.5cm after 4 days. In the same class, group 7s egg expanded by 1.1cm. Compared to group 3, group 7s egg expanded 3.4cm less. The groups got different results because they either measured wrong or the water molecules transferred faster in one group.
