MODELING OSMOSIS (LAB) PROBLEM: Which way will water flow when a raw egg is placed in 250ml of vinegar?

HYPOTHESIS: If a raw egg is placed in vinegar (water) and left for three days, then the water will flow into the egg from an area of high concentration through the membrane into an area of low concentration causing the egg to expand. THEORY: Osmosis is the diffusion of water from an area of high concentration to an area of low concentration across a selectively permeable membrane. Vinegar is made up of 95% water and the egg is made up of 74% water, and since the vinegar is more highly concentrated, it will flow into the egg, which is less concentrated with water Since there are more water molecules on the outside of the egg which has a higher concentration, and less on the inside, the outside water molecules which have a higher concentration will flow through the membrane into the egg, where there is a lower concentration of molecules causing the egg to expand. PROCEDURE: 1. Measure circumference of a raw egg using string and a ruler in cm. 2. Place egg in beaker and fill with 150 mL of vinegar. 3. Record observations. 4. Measure circumference for 4 days and record observations. DATA/OBSERVATIONS: DAYS 1 3 CIRCUMFERENCE (cm) 14.8 16.8 LIQUID LEVEL (ml) 300 262 OBSERVATIONS 50 ml displaced, bubbling upward Very heavy, and slimy, a little bit of shell still attached. Displaced 38 ml. Water level without egg was Water level 190 without egg Displaced 68ml Egg was slimy and no shell left on it

CONCLUSION In this lab, we studied the process of Osmosis using an egg and vinegar. We left an egg in the vinegar for four days, and during that time period, the water molecules with the higher area of concentration (vinegar) flowed into the lower area of concentration (egg) through the selectively permeable membrane.

After four days, our egg expanded 2.5 cm, Which is 0.5 cm smaller than the class average, which was 3.0, and 0.2 cm smaller than the grade average, which was 2.7. My hypothesis stated that If a raw egg is placed in vinegar (water) and left for three days, then the water will flow into the egg from an area of high concentration through the membrane into an area of low concentration causing the egg to expand. My hypothesis was correct 100% of the time. ANALYSIS When the egg was placed in the vinegar its shell dissolved. This is because there was chemical reaction, due to fact that the egg shell (calcium carbonate) when placed in vinegar (weak acid) causes the egg shell to dissolve. Period 7 Group 3s egg expanded by 4.5 cm after 4 days, compared to Group 7, which expanded 1.1 cm. Group 3s egg expanded 3.4 cm more than group 7s egg. The rate in which Group 3s egg expanded was about 1.125 cm per day compared to group 7s egg who rate of about 0.275 cm per day. I believe these groups have different results because there might have been a slight calculation error from group seven. I can prove this because group 7s egg expanding rate was very different from all the other groups. Water is important in cells because like humans, cells need water to function. These functions are maintaining the cells temperature and shape, diluting chemicals, and carrying materials in and out of the cell.
