Margo McCullough October 1, 2013 MODELING OSMOSIS (LAB) PROBLEM: Which way will water flow when a raw

egg is placed in 250ml of vinegar? HYPOTHESIS: If a raw egg is placed in vinegar (water) and left for four days, then the water will flow into the egg from an area of high concentration through the membrane into an area of low concentration causing the egg to expand. THEORY: Osmosis is the diffusion of water from an area of high concentration to an area of low concentration across a selectively permeable membrane. I hypothesized that if an egg was placed in vinegar (water) and left for three days the water will flow into the egg because after three days the water will cause the shell to dissolve and cause water to leak into the egg. When the shell is but in the vinegar the shell starts dissolving, exposing the membrane. Although the shell dissolves the egg still has a cover to protect it, but water can still leak through very small holes to cause water to flow into the egg. I dont think that water will flow out of the egg because its covered in water and there is no waterpower that could push water out of the egg; water would get into the egg by coming through the small pores. The water will come into the egg and the egg will expand. The egg has less water in the vinegar so the water from the vinegar will flow into the egg. PROCEDURE: 1. Measure circumference of a raw egg using string and a ruler in cm. 2. An egg using string and a ruler in cm. 3. Place egg in beaker and fill with 250 mL of vinegar. 4. Record observations. 5. Measure circumference for 4 days and record observations. DATA/OBSERVATIONS: DAYS CIRCUMFERENCE (cm) 1 14

CONCLUSION In this lab we modeled osmosis. Water flowed from an area of high concentration to an area of low concentration. The water went into the tiny pours causing the egg to expand. The expansion in our group was 1.6 less than the average expansion in 7th grade. I hypothesized that the water would flow into the egg, my hypothesis was correct. The water got into the egg by going into the tiny pours because the water and vinegar had more consecration than the egg. Getting water into the egg caused the egg to expand. At the end of the experiment we poked the eggs and the water pored out of it. ANALYSIS The Vinegar and water caused the eggshell to dissolve because the vinegar, which is a weak acid, had a higher area of concentration than the egg, which causes water to flow into the egg. In period 7ths class group 3 had expanded 4.5 cm after 4 days, our groups egg had only expanded 1.1 cm. Our egg was 3.4 cm less than group 3s egg. The groups got different results because there could be less consecration in the groups vinegar. Or the group had a smaller egg, or had an egg with less pours or

smaller pours. Cells need water because water helps the cells function, dissolves chemicals, and cells are important to have running well because if they dont intake water then food and water will not be able to move through the objects cells.
